Stowmarket Carnival
Do you remember the thrill of carnivals as a child? The smell of candy floss, the glittering floats, the laughter, the parade. In Stowmarket, that magic is still alive and well.
Each year in July Stowmarket Carnival returns, and with it nearly a century of community spirit. With roots stretching back to the 1920s, and funfair traditions dating to the early 1900s, Stowmarket’s Carnival has always been about fun, togetherness, and local pride. It’s changed over the decades, but the heart of it remains the same: families coming together to celebrate the town and each other.
Behind the scenes, an extraordinary team of unpaid volunteers works year-round to make it all happen. With planning meetings from September onwards, to the frantic weekend itself in July, it’s a huge feat of coordination and volunteer power: fences to erect, equipment to deliver, float prep at dawn. Then there’s the event itself. The iconic parade winding through town; circus acts and stalls for charities, crafts and food; the beer tent; and the Sunday Classic Car show.
Simon Burton, Carnival chairman, said: “We are grateful to all who continue to support Stowmarket Carnival — including Stowmarket Town Council and Mid Suffolk District Council, local businesses, the general public, and all the helpers and their families.”
“I would particularly like to thank the army of volunteers who collected donations throughout the Carnival in the red Carnival buckets.
Every year the Stowmarket Carnival brings colour, music and community spirit to the town with thousands enjoying a weekend of family fun, and the bucket collection is a vital element in keeping this wonderful tradition alive.
This year we were delighted to collect £885 during the procession, and a further £187 on the Rec, and this will go towards the £30,000 needed to bring the sights sounds and smiles of this beloved community event back for 2026!”
The Carnival Committee will again be at the Stowmarket Christmas Fayre on the last Sunday in November, at Red Gables, fundraising for the next Stowmarket Carnival on 17-19 July 2026. See you there?
