Taking Local Priorities to Labour Party Conference
Labour Party Conference in Liverpool was an opportunity to raise the issues that matter to people in Stowmarket and the surrounding villages with organisations and decision-makers who can help deliver change.
I met Jonathan Denby from Greater Anglia to discuss investment in our rail network, including improvements to Haughley and Ely junctions as freight demand grows, not least with Sizewell C. We also discussed the need for more reliable Wi-Fi on the Norwich–London route, which many Stowmarket passengers depend on.
As a former NHS surgeon, I also joined discussions about improving NHS services and supporting the workforce. We explored how better digital records and more treatment closer to home could make life easier for patients, while reducing unnecessary hospital visits.
Conferences matter most when conversations lead to action. I will continue following up these discussions and making sure our area’s needs are heard.
You Told Me What Matters Most
Thank you to everyone who completed my summer listening survey. Almost 250 residents responded, giving me a valuable picture of the pressures families and communities are facing.
Nationally, the cost of living and health were the biggest concerns, closely followed by climate issues.
Locally, access to NHS dentistry was the most frequently selected concern, followed by the cost of living and GP services.
One in five respondents identified hospital services as their main local concern. That is why the planned new West Suffolk Hospital matters so much. With construction expected to begin as early as next year, I will continue supporting progress while pressing for the care people need today.
These results will help guide the issues I raise in Parliament and the priorities I pursue across the constituency. Please keep sharing your experiences with me.
Celebrating Our Community Champions
It has been wonderful to see the people who make our communities special recognised through the Stowmarket Town Council Community Awards and Suffolk Community Awards. These awards celebrate residents, volunteers and organisations who give their time to help neighbours, support local causes and make our towns and villages better places to live. Much of that work happens quietly, often without the recognition it deserves.
I was pleased to see Stowmarket Town Clerk David Blackburn named Clerk of the Year. Congratulations to David and to everyone nominated or honoured.
Stowmarket has a tremendous community spirit. I am proud to celebrate those who strengthen it, and I will keep working alongside residents to help our town and surrounding villages thrive.
