Stowmarket Mayor’s Update

November began with parades and poppies, and as I write this, I imagine you’re enjoying a mince pie, carefully avoiding that one aunt who’s had a sprout too many!

This month has been full of moments for reflection and celebration. I attended the Armistice Dinner, Remembrance Sunday, Armistice Day, and church services, including the Salvation Army, where I learned more about poppies. Speaking at both the Red and White Remembrance services was an honour, reminding us of the importance of inclusive remembrance and acknowledging the full cost of war.

I also enjoyed the book launch celebrating 100 years of SODS and had a sneak peek at their panto rehearsal. The Christmas Tree Festival Launch was a treat, where I caught up with Charlie Haylock after many years. Another highlight was the Stowmarket Chorale Concert, with stunning singing and the great honour of sitting next to Sir Terry Waite.

I presented the Poppy Award to Wood Ley Community Primary School for their contributions to the Poppy Appeal, and the month’s highlight was opening and attending the first Growing Places Christmas Market. This fantastic social enterprise, close to my heart, supports adults with disabilities or disadvantages. I even made a wreath, picked up presents, and stocked up on seasonal veg—yes, including sprouts!

Stowmarket Christmas Fayre Cancelled, But Festive Spirit Remains Strong

Stowmarket’s highly anticipated Christmas Fayre was set to attract thousands of visitors. Unfortunately, Storm Bert had other plans, with wind gusts of up to 50mph forecasted. After careful consideration, consulting with various agencies, monitoring wind conditions and discussing the risks with traders, the difficult decision to cancel the event for safety reasons was made.

While the cancellation was disappointing many local traders expressed gratitude for the Town Council’s proactive approach. Safety was the top priority, and with forecasted winds of 50mph, the risks of accidents, damage to traders stock, and dangers to public safety made the cancellation the only responsible choice. Additionally, most insurance policies for traders and entertainment prohibit working in conditions with winds exceeding 30mph.

Despite the cancellation, the festive spirit in Stowmarket remained strong. Many indoor partner locations continued with their planned activities, all were well received, with a great turnout and positive feedback from both visitors and organisers.
