Time to Book Your Flu Vaccination
Flu season is upon us, which means it’s time to book those all-important vaccinations. Across Stowmarket and the surrounding area, several local sites have now launched their NHS seasonal vaccination programmes. Many offer evening and weekend appointments, making it easy to find a time that suits your schedule.
Nearby pharmacies providing free flu jabs include Tesco in-store pharmacy (Cedars Link Road), Boots (Ipswich Street), ASDA pharmacy (Wilkes Way), and Combs Ford pharmacy (Combs Lane). You can book your appointment quickly and easily via the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/vaccination-and-booking-services/book-flu-vaccination
Major Investment for Stowmarket High School
I was delighted to hear that Stowmarket High School will be receiving a significant investment to create at least 300 additional school places, increasing its capacity to around 1,200 pupils. Mid Suffolk District Council has agreed to invest £4.8 million.
This investment is well deserved and will make a tangible difference for families and students across Stowmarket. I look forward to seeing the benefits this expansion will bring to our growing community.
A Warm Welcome at Abbot’s Hall Primary School
I had the pleasure of visiting Abbot’s Hall Primary School, where I witnessed the outstanding work being done by both staff and students. Inclusion is clearly embedded as a core value, which shines through every part of school life.
A particular highlight was seeing younger children enjoying Government-funded hot meals, which are currently available to eligible pupils and provide vital support for families. The Government recently announced that from September 2026, the eligibility criteria for free school meals will expand to include all households receiving Universal Credit. This will make a real difference for thousands of families, reducing financial pressure and ensuring even more children benefit from a healthy meal at school.
The school also runs its own initiatives, including a morning toast club for up to 20 children. Having recently spoken at the Labour Party Conference on tackling child malnutrition, I found this especially encouraging. These efforts genuinely change lives, and I’ll continue to champion them.
Before leaving, I spoke with pupils about what laws they’d like to see implemented. Their ideas ranged from tackling plastic waste to ensuring access to healthy food and clean water, alongside a few ambitious proposals, like a four-day weekend for students! While I can’t promise I’ll get the Prime Minister to agree to that one, I’ll certainly keep championing their creativity and fairness.
