Woodbridge Marks 450 Years of the Shire Hall
This September, the historic heart of Woodbridge will come alive with the sights and sounds of the 16th century as the town marks a remarkable milestone: 450 years of the Shire Hall on Market Hill. On Saturday 13th September 2025, from 12pm to 5pm, Woodbridge Town Council will host an Elizabethan-themed celebration, bringing the town’s past vividly to life with a day of free entertainment, food, music, and community spirit.
Falling within National Heritage Week, this celebration offers a perfect opportunity to reflect on the rich history of the Shire Hall, which has stood at the centre of civic life since the reign of Elizabeth I. Visitors can step inside this historic building and experience its rarely seen first-floor courtroom, alongside an immersive art session hosted by Woodbridge Festival of Art and Music, where participants will help create collaborative artworks inspired by the town’s past.
The festivities begin early, when Woodbridge Festival presents a Friday night of music and art on Market Hill, with projections inspired by the 450-years celebrations. A drop-in screen-printing workshop will be open to all ages, offering the first 50 attendees a chance to create a limited-edition commemorative tote bag.
Saturday’s main event brings the 16th century to life with living history displays throughout town. Costumed actors will recreate Tudor street scenes and storytelling, while interactive performances from jesters provide fun for the whole family. A traditional early dance workshop will give visitors a chance to try some graceful Elizabethan moves, accompanied by live music from local group Pearl in the Egg.
There’ll be plenty of free giveaways throughout the day as a thank-you to the community. Street entertainment will include jesters performing and leading interactive workshops, giving families the chance to experience the festive spirit of a 16th-century fair. Food lovers are in for a treat, too: the Town Council has subsidised a hog roast and traditional pie and mash, ensuring everyone can afford a reduced-price hearty taste of history. The Galley Creamery will be serving a specially commissioned heritage ice cream flavour, while The Kings Head pub will be providing drinks on the day.
The combination of historical immersion, creative engagement, community energy, and good old-fashioned fun promises to make this a day to remember.
With free entry and activities for all ages, the 450th anniversary of the Shire Hall is not only a tribute to Woodbridge’s past — it’s a joyful expression of its enduring sense of place and pride. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a curious visitor, you’re warmly invited to join in this unique celebration of local heritage.
