MP update on Thurston Level crossing

Recent discussions regarding the future of the Thurston level crossing have been particularly encouraging. The dangerous nature of this pedestrian-only crossing has concerned residents for many years, with repeated reports of near misses, and it is right that action is now finally being taken.
I recently met with the parish, district and county councillors who represent Thurston, all of whom share my determination to see this issue addressed. During a visit to the site, I saw the risks first hand. It was deeply concerning to witness how such a crossing has remained in operation for so long, which is why I am pleased that real progress is now being made.
Mid Suffolk Council has allocated over £500,000 in Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding towards a report that will help determine the preferred long-term solution. At present, the preferred option appears to be reopening the historic Victorian tunnel underpass. While the structure is already in place, extensive surveying work will be required to assess its condition and long-term suitability, as it is feared the tunnel may be filled with debris.
At the beginning of February, a meeting was held with Greater Anglia, Network Rail and a representative from the parish council to discuss safety at the crossing and to seek an update on the survey’s progress. Network Rail explained that necessary steps include soil analysis and a full site assessment. While these processes understandably take time, the report is scheduled to be published in summer 2026.
Whatever option is ultimately chosen, this will be a complex project that requires patience to ensure the outcome serves the community not just now, but for generations to come. I remain confident this will be delivered, because the people of Thurston deserve a safer and more sustainable solution.
Going forward, local stakeholders will receive monthly updates from Network Rail, and I will continue to share any relevant developments with you through this flyer.
