The Stansted October Flyer ’23
Welcome to your October issue of the Stansted and Dunmow Flyer. Amongst the community news and local events in this issue there’s a great choice of things to do. With many events coming up, alongside your community news, this is a full issue as usual.
The Stansted Flyer October Update and Welcome
Autumn is definitely upon us; a season of great variety with a rich range of colours and hopefully some good weather. I love individual and family walks with crunchy leaves underfoot! Inside this issue you’ll find plenty of community news to catch up on, as well as events and things to do.
Stansted Events October
We find out this month about the recent event to mark the reprinting of the Village Trail leaflet. Two very long standing residents, John Salmon and Tony Wellings, gave a fascinating insight into how much the village has changed over the last hundred years or so. The event raised £200 for village charities and the leaflet is available in the library and tourist information offices.
The Gardens of Easton Lodge have their final monthly Open Day (15th October) which includes a dog show. You may even spot some weird shaped tromboncinos during your autumnal visit! The Gardens are also open on Thursdays until the end of October. Let’s Talk Stansted! is holding a wellbeing festival and Daisy May’s Farm has half term Halloween events.
Stansted Community
In addition, Essex libraries highlight the range of activities and resources for teenagers, why not make a visit to your local library and dive into the latest BookTok recommendations? The Elsenham Farmers Market is at Elsenham Village/school hall (28th October and 2nd December are the next dates) and the Henham Christmas Market – with all proceeds going towards Meningitis Research Foundation and Making Steps For Mason – is on the 10th November. There is so much to do! Find out more about all these events and more inside your magazine.
Stansted Charity
In charity news we hear from St Clare Hospice about Compassionate Neighbours; volunteers to provide support to people living with a serious illness, as well as the elderly, who feel isolated or lonely. The charity is also making a stock appeal and would welcome your donations for their charity shops.
Citizens Advice Uttlesford has varied, challenging and rewarding volunteering opportunities, no experience necessary and all the training is provided. UCAN (Uttlesford Community Action Network) Volunteer Centre is hosting a Volunteer Showcase event (24th October) for local voluntary organisations to highlight their opportunities and volunteers to find out more. Read about all these charity updates in your Flyer.
Thank you to Ken McDonald for his report on the recent Nancy May concert at St Mary’s Church (look out for other news from St Mary’s too) Nancy is a young soprano who lives locally; her next scheduled local appearance is the 23rd December (but at a different venue) Why not discover more inside?
Stansted Sports Updates
Clubs and groups this time include the Stansted Tennis Club (a report on the final ladies only fun tournament of the year and future events), Elsenham WI (about entertainment from Essex’s only female Sea Shanty Band and wine tasting) and Dunmow Rotary Club (on its annual Metal Detectors Day) and there are so many other groups sharing their news inside, so don’t miss out! Plus we have updates from local schools; St Mary’s and Forest Hall School PTA.
Do enjoy this autumnal issue and thank you very much to everyone who contributes community editorial. We’ll be pleased to continue to share as much community news as we are able to.
With best wishes
