Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your new season Flyer. We hope September – and beyond – goes well for everyone in education and perhaps this could be the ideal time to participate in activities and events taking place this autumn?
At the Windmill the annual fete and a September open afternoon are both taking place (see details in your magazine). I have previously visited with my family and admired the building inside and out. The Gardens of Easton Lodge are open on Thursdays and are also holding both an evening Bat Walk and their Apples and Bees Day this month. There are regular events at Stansted library so if you haven’t visited for a while, why not pop in and discover what’s happening?
Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) and Saffron Walden Library have joined forces to create a Community Day with Dog Show (19th September) on The Common. This event was originally due to take place in June but was re-arranged because of the hot weather: www.facebook.com/SaffronWaldenTownCouncil Plus, the Dunmow Art Group Art Exhibition is at St. Mary’s Church, Stebbing (10th and 11th October). Both art and photography – from the Dunmow Photography Club – will be on display.
In club and charity news we have a practical report from Sustainable Uttlesford about getting ready for winter with some simple tips to save energy and money. Stansted Mountfitchet u3a asks “what do Henry VIII and Audrey Hepburn have in common?” Pearls, of course. A recent speaker, James Middleton, covered the biology and history of pearls and much more. The u3a also runs a monthly IT class that may help smooth out those digital bumps.
We hear about Memory Lane Café in Stansted, a relaxed and welcoming space for people living with dementia, and their loved ones and carers. You can find them at TouchPoint, Crafton Green House on Monday mornings. Toe Beans Cat Rescue provides safety, warmth, medical care, and a foster home filled with love. But providing this level of care now costs far more than their adoption fees can cover. They have launched an appeal and ask for support so they can continue to help the cats that need them the most.
Let’s Talk, Stansted! exists because they believe that nobody should have to struggle alone, and that by coming together as a community, we can help create a more connected, supportive and understanding place for everyone. From funding training and signposting support, to running their annual wellbeing festival, everything they do is powered by volunteers. Would you like to join them? In addition, we hear from Uttlesford Foodbank who last year delivered over 1,900 food parcels to households in financial crisis across Uttlesford. This autumn they are asking schools, churches, community groups, local organisations and individuals to consider donating any harvest festival collections to Uttlesford Foodbank. They are happy to collect donations; they just need the festival date and the collection date and time.
Finally, Support 4 Sight highlights National Eye Health Week (21st–27th September), and the message of “get your eyes tested”. The charity believes no one should face sight loss alone and they provide practical advice, emotional support and opportunities to stay connected.
