The Stansted Flyer Magazine October ’26 Update and Welcome

Letter from the Editor

As I write your October issue welcome letter I hope we can all enjoy the autumn colours and that half term goes well for everyone it’s relevant to. Plus, don’t forget our clocks go back on Sunday 25th October!

Your autumn events and community news include the final Open Day of the season at the Gardens of Easton Lodge on the 18th October, with guess the weight of the pumpkins, Halloween decorations around the Gardens, the trail and family games. Plus, a jam and jelly tombola, local produce, craft stalls and the Rock Choir will sing from 12pm. The Gardens are also open on Thursdays to the end of October. The Windmill has an Open Day in early October and it looks like Santa will be available at the Mill again this year, with dates to be confirmed. If you want to make the most of exploring outside, we have a feature on the Essex Wildlife Trust’s Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve (and there are many other Nature Reserves to explore too). Additionally, the Hundred Parishes Society has a wide variety of self-guided walking routes on its website and I have personally enjoyed going on some of these walks.

There are half term activities for children at the Saffron Walden Museum – watch out for all manner of super spooky Halloween themed crafts, there will be something to delight (or spook!) children of all ages. Craft activities are bookable via Eventbrite, please note that adult admission also applies. The Thaxted arts and crafts fair (17th October) is free and free parking in village car parks, with donations welcome in support of Thaxted Church and the Dunmow Art Group Art Exhibition is at St. Mary’s Church, Stebbing (10th and 11th October) with art and photography – from the Dunmow Photography Club – on display.

We have also discovered that the Essex Wildlife Trust photography competition is open. The competition closes on Monday 30th November, so you have plenty of time. Why not find out more about all these events and activities in your Flyer?

Getting ready for winter, Sustainable Uttlesford shares practical tips with us to save energy and money and the Memory Lane Café in Stansted invites those living with dementia, and their loved ones and carers, to pop in on a Monday morning. Other group news includes team and fixture updates from Stansted Football Club; finals day from Stansted Bowling Club and a report about the Stansted Business Forum’s September meeting. Plus, Stansted Mountfitchet u3a highlights some October speaker events and meetings; just a taste of what they offer to those who are retired or no longer in full-time employment. All these groups would be pleased to hear from you and tell you more.

Charity news includes Uttlesford Foodbank’s Director Katy attending Westminster to join the Roundtable of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Ending The Need For Food Banks. Uttlesford Foodbank was invited to attend and present the perspective of a rural food bank. To access the full Minutes of the Roundtable, please email: public.affairs@trussell.org.uk We also hear about Dorothy, a nurse at St Clare Hospice who took on the leap from 13,000 feet to raise over £1,700 of vital funds for the charity, thanks to the generosity of family and friends. An incredible achievement.

Thank you for your support and enjoy your October Flyer.

With best wishes
