The Stansted Flyer Magazine October ’24 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
It’s the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ (Ode to Autumn by Keats) so let’s hope we get some sunny autumn days and can make the most of our current daylight hours, ahead of the clocks changing on the last Sunday in October. As always, you’ll find plenty of community updates in this issue.
Sustainable Stansted ‘Energy Saving and Sustainability Open Day’
We are reminded about the Sustainable Stansted ‘Energy Saving and Sustainability Open Day’ this month (do look inside for the full details) as well as the final 2024 Open Day at the Mill (although the Millers are happy to open for group tours) plus Santa at the Mill will be confirmed shortly! Your local library shares volunteering opportunities and Dunmow Art Group highlights two upcoming events in October and November, non-members are welcome.
The Gardens of Easton Lodge holds its final Sunday Open Day for this year (13th October), with Halloween activities and music, and they will also remain open every Thursday until the end of October. Why not make a visit?
Other charity news includes Danaher Animal Home introducing us to Bebe, would you like to know more about this canine friend? The charity is also very grateful for donations, including pet food and towels. Additionally, Human Roots has been very busy and has now donated well over 50 kilos of fresh produce to Touchpoint in Stansted for their food share. They’re always happy to welcome new volunteers!
St Clare Hospice reports that £15,000 was raised during its recent Summer Fayre, which could cover the cost of running its Community Palliative Care Team of nurses, doctors and healthcare assistants for five days.
We also hear from Let’s Talk Stansted! about their weekly early evening walking group ‘Muddy Walkers’ as well as a Men’s Talk Club, the Veg Shed gardening group and the Unfit Kickabouts football group. Plus, their Wellbeing Festival is happening this month at St. John’s Church and Hall in Stansted – they are always there for a chat.
Club and group news includes the results of the Stansted Tennis Club’s annual Championship Finals’ Day. The results are in your magazine and presentations were made by Club Chairman Jamie Hogg, who thanked all the helpers. In addition, Stansted Bowling Club updates us on recent competitions and lets us know that they plan to hold a number of events, such as quiz nights, during the close season. Both these clubs would be pleased to welcome new members. Plus, we have a report on the recent Anglia in Bloom award ceremony including the details of local award winners; the Judges described Stansted as “a vibrant community with a strong cultural and historical heritage.”
Stansted Business Forum shares an update from local charity Support 4 Sight, who recently spoke about their service at a Forum meeting. Support 4 Sight’s commitment is to ensure that no-one faces sight loss unsupported and they also support clients to gain or retain employment. It’s very informative. Additionally, we hear from Lynda at St Mary’s Church about their busy year so far; a lot has been happening!
There’s school news to catch up on in this issue too. Thank you for your support; we hope you enjoy your October Flyer.
With best wishes
