The Stansted Flyer Magazine November ’25 Update and Welcome

Letter from the Editor

As I write your November welcome letter it hardly seems possible that we are this far through the year. In this issue you’ll find a range of local community updates and information about festive/ winter events.

Events and activities include a new exhibition at Saffron Walden Museum, “Pooch”, which explores the history, science and culture of our best friends (on until spring next year); Hatfield Forest reminds us that this is a quieter time to visit and Daisy May’s Farm in Elsenham is open and getting ready for their Christmas events!

St Mary’s School has its Christmas Fayre (28th November) and you’re invited to come and support them. Santa at the Mill (6th December) will see the first floor of the Mill transformed into a magical grotto. He will be arriving to see children from 1.00pm but he needs to be away by 5.00pm, so last admission will be at 4.30pm.

The St Mary’s Church Christmas Tree festival (6th and 7th December) also includes a concert and carols (6th December, 3pm). If you or your organisation would like a space to decorate a tree, Lynda asks if you can contact her (details are inside). Elsenham Community Choir are holding a Christmas Choral Extravaganza (13th December) at Elsenham Village Hall, next to the school. Festive refreshments will be available and there is no charge for the event, but the Choir will be happy to receive donations for a local charity. The Christmas Fayre in Bishop’s Stortford (6th December) includes a wide variety of stalls, music and entertainment and Santa will be popping by to say Merry Christmas!

In local club news Elsenham Bowls and Social Club and Stansted Bowls Club share recent competition results and achievements. Congratulations to all involved; new members are welcome at both clubs. Other community and charity updates include an introduction to Toe Beans Cat Rescue. Toe Beans is a volunteer-led cat rescue helping felines across the Uttlesford District. They would welcome help with fostering, donating, or providing supplies. We also discover that there’s a wide range of volunteering opportunities available at Essex Library Service and that Saffron Walden Museum would be pleased to welcome new volunteers.

Thank you to Support 4 Sight for sending in a report to us, which includes highlighting some of their services, such as Sight Hubs. These provide information, advice, and guidance on living with sight loss, demonstrations of assistive technology and equipment and the opportunity to meet with peers over a cuppa. Find out more about this charity and its future planning in your magazine.

Ken from The Hundred Parishes Society shares his insightful story of recently tackling the longest walk on the Society’s website, between Ware Station and Stansted Mountfitchet Station (Station Walk number 18). “After leaving Ware, the route is all in lovely countryside, passing through eight of our hundred parishes: Wareside, Standon, Thundridge, Braughing and Albury in Hertfordshire and then Farnham, Manuden and Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex”. Ken successfully completed the 17 mile walk, accompanied for the last six miles by his wife Janice, and is now returning to the many shorter routes on the website www.hundredparishes.org.uk/walks – congratulations to you Ken and why not take a look at their website for your own walking inspiration? Walks start from 1 mile upwards!

I hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
