The Stansted Flyer Magazine November ’24 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to the November issue of your Flyer magazine. I hope you’ll find the wide range of community news articles and things to do useful, as we move closer towards the end of the year and what can often be a very busy time!
The Hundred Parishes Society shares details of its ‘Quiet Lane Walks’ (there are nearly 40); they sound a great way to blow the cobwebs away and avoid muddy boots. Santa at the Mill is coming up on the 7th December. The first floor of the mill will be transformed into a Santa’s Grotto which sounds wonderful: www.facebook.com/Stansted.Windmill Also on this date is the Grand Christmas Bazaar at the Catholic Church Hall in Great Dunmow (a church fundraiser) plus the Bishop’s Stortford Christmas Fayre; a very busy day! If you like a quirky challenge, supporters of the charity Support 4 Sight (between 6th and 7th December) will be cycling on a static bike to create enough energy to keep a light bulb lit for a full 30 hours! All are welcome to get involved in this sponsored event, which is part of the charity’s 30th anniversary.
Other things ahead include a Christmas market (30th November) at the social club. We also find out about a brand new exhibition at Saffron Walden Museum: “We Choose to Go to the Moon”. See a facsimile of the Apollo 11 flight plan, get up close to meteorites, explore the stars with a mini planetarium and much more. Plus, we share a report which includes the Stansted fireworks. Why not find out about all these activities inside your Flyer?
Other charity news includes an update from St Clare Hospice about its new shop in Priors Green, Takeley. Every purchase will help support people who are living with a life-limiting illness. If you would like to know more about volunteering at the shop: www.stclarehospice.org.uk Human Roots volunteers have been busy on the allotment and they are able to supply produce to Touchpoint for their food share on a more regular basis. They are always happy to welcome new volunteers.
Let’s Talk Stansted! tells us that November is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month. They support men of all ages through social groups and activities that raise awareness about men’s health issues – find out more about all they do (for the whole community): www.letstalkstansted.org
We have articles from local clubs and groups. Sustainable Stansted highlights a number of projects and some initiatives that are under consideration (find out more inside). If you can offer any help, want to find out more or have ideas for protecting or restoring our environment, you can email them: sustainablestansted@gmail.com Stansted Tennis Club updates us on a recent adult and child tennis challenge and the results of the Kitson Trophy competition plus Stansted u3a shares news about its next speaker, a Gold Star member of the Magic Circle, and that its monthly meetings will relocate to St Theresa’s Centre from December. There are many other news items inside; all the charities, clubs and groups you read about would be pleased to hear from you.
With the usual round-up of school news as well, we hope you enjoy your November magazine. Thank you for all your support and contributions.
With best wishes
Stephanie Adams, Editor
