The Stansted Flyer Magazine May ’26 Update and Welcome

Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your May Flyer. I hope you can enjoy our longer daylight evenings and the wildlife that seems to be everywhere now. Perhaps it is a good opportunity to look at the free walking routes on the Hundred Parishes Society website? Inside your magazine there’s plenty of things to do and useful community updates.

On the theme of nature and the environment, Sustainable Uttlesford is hosting its first Uttlesford Big Green Festival (6th to the 14th June). Throughout the week, you will be able to join workshops, talks, exhibitions, repair cafés, family activities, green fairs, nature walks and more: www.uttlesford.gov.uk/green-festival We also hear from Sustainable Stansted about No Mow May. It’s run by the charity Plantlife and encourages people to put the mower away. Within weeks, lawns can provide vital food sources for bees, butterflies and other pollinators emerging hungry after winter. Why not find out more in your magazine?

As well as being open every Thursday in May, the Gardens of Easton Lodge has a Nature Day (10th May) where you can browse information about the history of the Gardens, gardeners and surrounding area plus enjoy a range of fun nature activities. Also, Manuden has an Open Gardens event (21st June), which includes a Classic and Sports Car show and Human Roots warmly welcomes those interested in joining their volunteer team to grow produce on the allotment!

In other local group news Open Days are happening at the Stansted Bowling Club (9th May) and the Elsenham Bowls and Social Club (24th May), where you will be welcome to try out bowling. If you can’t make these dates, the Clubs would be pleased to see you at a different time. The Millers tell us that the mill is open on three days in May with one of the dates (11th May) being part of the National Mills weekend, which offers people a chance to explore wind and watermills across the UK, many of which are not usually open to the public. Sounds fascinating!

Stansted Mountfitchet u3a shares details about history events during May, as well as information about its next Saturday Seminar: www.stansted.u3asite.uk Plus the Stansted Tennis Club thanks and highlights the work of over 40 members who volunteer throughout the year, with Club Chairman, Jamie Hogg having recently said that it: ‘…fosters a real community spirit and sense of ownership. It’s what makes our club so special.’ www.stanstedtennisclub.co.uk All the groups and organisations I have mentioned in my letter would be glad to hear from you.

Do you know about Buffy Playbus? Founded to create a safe, inclusive, and joyful space where children can play, learn, and build meaningful connections in their local area, it brings play opportunities directly to local communities across Uttlesford. If you’re interested in visiting the bus or discovering further information, you can find out more in your magazine. We also have school news inside, which includes an inspiring update about nine year old Martha who goes to Thaxted Primary School. Martha wanted to raise money to get some fun things for the new outdoor play and learning, so she swam 132 lengths. Her family said: “She did amazingly well and we are all super proud of her!”

Thank you for your support and enjoy your Flyer.

With best wishes
