The Stansted Flyer Magazine May ’25 Update and Welcome

Letter from the Editor

It’s lovely to write this letter knowing longer days will continue to stretch out in front of us for some time. I hope you’ll be able to make the most of this time of year. As well as free walking routes via The Hundred Parishes Society website, Let’s Talk, Stansted! highlights the fact May is National Walking Month and that it has a Thursday evening walking group, Stansted u3a has two separate walking groups and Hatfield Forest tells us about its new “Houblons and Hornbeams” free walks, which start on the 23rd May. Booking is required for the Hatfield Forest walks.

Your May issue has all the usual local events and community news, to keep you informed up to and beyond the half term week. The Millers share another update on the re-pointing work and the three Open Days they are holding in May (5th, 11th and 26th) so why not take a visit? We also hear about the Saffron Walden Museum’s 190th birthday exhibition, which opens from the 10th May and sounds fascinating!

The Gardens of Easton Lodge is open on Thursdays and as the 80th anniversary of VE Day falls on a Thursday, visitors can choose to reflect on the significance of this day if they would like to. The history of the airfield will be on display, with photos and stories of those involved. Plus, the monthly Sunday Open Day (18th May) will focus on Easton Lodge’s Tudor history with activities for all ages and a range of stalls. Find out more inside your Flyer.

Lynda from St Mary’s Church has reported on the recent working party when Stansted 1st scouts were invited to join; she sends sincere thanks to all. The champing season has restarted and the church calendar is looking busy with theatre, band nights and Nancy May returning, details to follow. The church is open daily; you’re welcome to visit.

Club and Group news includes a report from Stansted Mountfitchet u3a with confirmation that the AGM is on the 15th May. Amongst the range of classes on offer are those concentrating on physical activity. As well as the walking groups, there is Pilates, Yoga and Chair Yoga and a Line Dancing group. You’re very welcome to try out any class. We also hear from the Dunmow Art Group – local artist Tracey has won the Group’s Best in Show award for her acrylic artwork ‘Bench on Flitch Way’. They have a regular programme of weekly art meetings/classes and monthly visiting artists. Stansted Bowling Club is into the season proper now. Spectators are always welcome and the Club is pleased to see new potential players come along. All these groups would welcome you getting in touch, if you’d like to find out more and get involved.

Essex Libraries are looking for volunteers (aged 14 and over) to help run their annual Summer Reading Challenge, that takes place through the summer break to encourage children to keep reading during the holidays. If you’re interested, why not find out more? It could be the perfect opportunity! Plus Let’s Talk, Stansted! has its AGM on the 20th May and you’re invited to come along. We also share school news with you.

Thank you for all your support and I hope you enjoy this month’s issue.

With best wishes
