The Stansted Flyer Magazine March ’25 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
With the clocks moving forward by an hour at the end of March (don’t forget!), it really is starting to feel more like spring. Let’s hope we can get out and enjoy some fresh air if we’d like to. If self-guided walking routes may be of interest to you, I can recommend the choice of free routes offered by The Hundred Parishes Society: www.hundredparishes.org.uk
You’ll find local things to do and community news in your issue, to keep you up to date. Events include a volunteers’ day at The Gardens of Easton Lodge (20th March) when you can find out about the range of volunteering opportunities available. The main opening season is from April to October, with the Gardens then open every Thursday (from the 3rd April) as well as one Sunday a month. We also find out about Dunmow Art Group’s annual Art Exhibition (15th and 16th March) with refreshments available to purchase during the event.
The Millers tell us their first open day of the year is on Easter Sunday and they will also be open on Easter Monday (20th and 21st April). During the Easter open days there will be an Easter Egg hunt for younger visitors. They’re also holding a Quiz Night (5th April) to raise funds for the Mill. Daisy May’s Farm in Elsenham reminds us about visiting to meet the new lambs and kid goats and hold the chicks and ducklings. Find out more on their Facebook page, which includes details about their Hatch a Chick scheme.
Saffron Walden Museum shares news about its Climate and Ecology Hub, the latest addition to the Museum’s permanent displays. This year marks the Museum’s 190th anniversary and local communities, groups, and individuals are invited to select their favourite objects from the Museum collection, which will be showcased in a special birthday exhibition. Why not make a visit to get involved?
Club and Group news includes an article from Stansted Tennis Club highlighting coaching and Club sessions, tournaments, league matches and social events. The Club also tells us that ‘The Ollie Toms Cup’ for most improved player was awarded jointly to two players, Grace and Jess – congratulations. In another update, Alexander tells us what it’s like as a young person volunteering at Sustainable Stansted. As part of the environmental group (there’s also an energy group) they’ve been conducting a biodiversity study around Stansted to map out the different habitats and foliage. Human Roots shares details about recent activities and future planning and they hope to donate fresh produce to Touchpoint later in the year. If you’d like to volunteer with Sustainable Stansted and/or Human Roots, they would be pleased to hear from you!
Are you, or do you know, any classical instrumentalists from Grade 5 upwards? The Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra has announced that this year’s Barker Bursary competition is open. Applicants are asked to complete an online form and upload a short video performance by the 30th June 2025. We also discover from Danaher Animal Home that Rowen is looking for a new home, could you give her (or another animal at Danaher) a forever home? Find out more inside your magazine.
We hope you enjoy reading this early springtime issue and thank you for all your support.
With best wishes
