The Stansted Flyer Magazine June ’25 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your June issue of the Flyer and doesn’t it feel like we’re at the gateway to summer? I hope you’ll find your magazine full of useful events and inspiration, as we make the most of the opportunities we currently get with these light evenings!
The Hundred Parishes Society share an article on parks, woods and gardens and tell us that June is the month when many private gardens open to the public. You can find details in the What’s On section of their website: www.hundredparishes.org.uk Sounds well worth a look to me. Other things to do include Nature Day (15th June) at the Gardens of Easton Lodge, with activities for all the family (the Gardens also open every Thursday, except for the 26th June); a concert by the Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra (29th June) and Music in the Park at Bentfield Primary School (5th July).
The annual libraries Summer Reading Challenge, an activity to encourage children to keep reading during the school holidays, starts in July and anyone aged 14+ interested in volunteering for it would be welcome to get in touch (details are inside your issue). Or why not pop into your local library to find out more?
We hear about forthcoming events at St Mary’s Church and Poul from Denmark playing his flute in church – very intriguing! The exhibition “Wonders: 190 years of Saffron Walden Museum” is now on; Uttlesford District Council tell us about the first public meeting of Sustainable Uttlesford, which is in June, and the Millers say that preparations are underway for their August Bank Holiday Fete – volunteers would be welcomed.
The Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day is on Saturday 21st June and the 8 Day Weekend (the Saffron Walden Carnival) takes place from the 4th to the 12th July. Find out more about all these summer events and activities in your Flyer; with something for everyone!
In this issue we feature an article from Maureen Caton at the Stansted Mountfitchet Town Council. The Council funded and hosted a VE Day 80 tea party at St John’s Church Hall. One hundred and twenty residents (born before 1950) – from the parish, the three care homes and Norman’s Court attended the successful event. Particular thanks goes to Uttlesford Community Travel who safely transported residents free of charge to and from the event. There are more details about this special event, and other VE Day activities from schools, in your magazine.
News from local groups includes Stansted in Bloom telling us about the Anglia in Bloom tour of the village and Stansted Mountfitchet u3a sharing details about some of the exercise activities they offer and day trip reports. A correction – the AGM for Stansted Mountfitchet u3a takes place at their June meeting and not in May, as had been stated in last month’s letter.
I have been in touch with Uttlesford resident Karen, who has supported the Convoy4Ukraine mission. In this inspirational update, you’ll find out that Karen drove 1,300 miles as part of a convoy, which then delivered trucks, medical aid and much more. Karen said: “We can’t solve the politics, but we can help the people. It is the most emotional trip I have done.”
I hope you enjoy this month’s issue and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
