The Stansted Flyer Magazine June ’24 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
I hope you can appreciate the great outdoors as much as possible this month and perhaps take part in ‘30 Days Wild’ organised by the Wildlife Trusts – it’s free and good fun for all ages! June is such a lovely time of year.
Stansted June ’24 Community News and Events
There’s plenty to catch up on this time, with a wide range of community news and events.
Things to do include the June Open Day at the Gardens of Easton Lodge (23rd June) plus the Gardens are also open on Thursdays. Hatfield Forest has “Solstice in the Forest” (21st June) and then an open air performance of “Hamlet” (25th June).
Several music events are ahead. Music in the Park (6th July) on Bentfield School field; a special weekend at St Mary’s Church with Post Floyd Dream, a tribute band (6th July) and then ‘That Other Band’ (7th July) and Thaxted Festival is inviting musicians to take part in music-making in Thaxted Church (5th and 6th July) in an informal event which is open to the public and will be free of charge.
Other activities include Dunmow Art Group’s Open Studios Trail (27th to 30th June); St Mary’s School Summer Fayre (13th July) and The Dunmow Flitch Trials (13th July). Preparations for the Windmill fete (26th August) are underway – anyone who would like to get involved is welcome to attend a pre-fete meeting (see www.facebook.com/stansted.windmill for the date, once it is confirmed).
Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day
In addition, Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day (15th June), the Manuden Open Gardens (16th June) and the Elsenham Fete (22nd June) are all taking place. There’s so much choice; why not look in your issue for details about these events?
Stansted Scout Group
Stansted Scout Group update us on their recent annual Renewal of Promise service held at St Mary’s church. A Scout from each section spoke about their past year in Scouting, what they had achieved and what they liked doing the most. We also hear from the Rotary Club of Dunmow about what has been accomplished during the past Rotary year and they’re on the lookout for new Rotarians to carry on the good work; new members are welcome. There are also many other club reports in this issue, all of whom would be pleased to hear from you.
Stansted Charity News
Charity news includes an update from Let’s Talk Stansted! They highlight topics including Loneliness Awareness Week (10th June to the 16th June) which this year has the theme “Random Acts of Connection.” We also have an article from Human Roots, the Stansted based community allotment. They say their aim is to put a bit back into the local community and they’re always happy to welcome new volunteers.
Plus, we hear from The Hundred Parishes Society about the barley-growing area of the Hertfordshire and Essex borders. The malting of barley in preparation for its use in the brewing industry was a significant activity in some villages and market towns. You can read more about this inside – and the Society also feature a wide range of self-guided walks on their website.
As well as your local school news, we find out about the home library service and a Sunday kickabout group on the Rec, enjoying footy but not too seriously. Find out more in your magazine!
Thank you for your support and enjoy your June Flyer.
With best wishes
