The Stansted Flyer Magazine July ’24 Update and Welcome

Letter from the Editor

As I write we are moving into the middle of summer; let’s hope we get the weather to be able to enjoy the great outdoors as much as we’d like to and are able to. There is so much to experience, from the many brightly coloured flowers, to butterflies and dragonflies, to the early birdsong!

Amongst this month’s community news and events, we hear from The Dunmow Flitch Trials™ with this year’s event (which includes the Flitch Fayre) happening on Saturday 13th July www.dunmowflitchtrials.co.uk The Stansted Millers tell us about a pre-fete meeting (Wednesday 10th July) to which anyone with an interest in helping with the fete or having a stall is invited. The fete will be on Monday 26th August www.stanstedwindmill.co.uk

The Summer Reading Challenge 2024 (from 20th July across all Essex libraries) is Marvellous Makers, encouraging children to get creative and show off their work inspired by their favourite books. Plus, the Saffron Walden Museum is gearing up for its latest exhibition: ‘Soggy Sandwiches: Tales of the British Summer’ (from the 20th July). There’s also plenty to do at Hatfield Forest this summer, including boats on the lake and junior fishing.

There are music related events in Stansted Mountfitchet and in Bishop’s Stortford. These include Nancy May, a classical soprano singer, on Sunday 11th August in St Mary’s Church, Stansted Mountfitchet; The Harmonaires Choir celebrating the music of female composers and lyricists on Saturday 13th July at The Methodist Church and the Harlow Chorus holding an evening of theatre and opera favourites, also on the 13th July at St Michael’s Church, Windhill.

We have an update from The Hundred Parishes Society on some of the old railways and walking routes from current railway stations are highlighted – plus they have a new series of Quiet Lane walks that do not use footpaths – all available from their website. We also hear about the King Edward VI Almshouses Charity in Saffron Walden and its Project Crocus – these are both very informative and fascinating articles.

Other charity news includes a call for volunteers within the Uttlesford area to join the Home-Start Essex team to provide support to families who need a bit of extra help. St Clare Hospice updates us on the recent annual Charity Golf Day at Saffron Walden Golf Club, where £13,515 was raised and we hear from Danaher Animal Home who are looking for a new home for King – do you love dogs? You can find out more about him or see other animals available for homing on their website. All these charities would be pleased to hear from you.

Local club and group news includes an invite from Stansted Art Group to come along for a chat and if you like what you see you would be very welcome to join! They meet on Monday afternoons in the Crafton Green meeting room. Also, the scouts recently visited St Mary’s church for a work party, with everyone working on various parts of the churchyard. Plus, u3a Stansted Mountfitchet tells us about a forthcoming national u3a Festival in York, as well as some of their other news. To find out more about these organisations – and everything else I have written about here – do look inside your magazine.

We hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
