The Stansted Flyer Magazine January ’25 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
A very warm welcome to our first issue of 2025 and we hope this new year starts well. As usual, there’s plenty of content covering a range of local community news and events, to help inform and inspire us through January and beyond.
Do you fancy trying something different for the New Year? Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is looking for new singers in all voice parts. The choir is preparing for an Easter performance and they would be pleased to hear from you. Or would you like to listen to a concert at St John’s Church (18th January) from the Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia? The Hundred Parishes Society website has self-guided walking routes, to help blow the cobwebs away (my family and I have been on a number of their varied and informative routes). Free adult-only and family learning courses are running from ACL Essex and there’s always something happening in your local library. A ‘warm space’ for everyone, with the children’s Winter Reading Challenge starting from the 2nd January!
News from local groups includes finding out about 2024 highlights and 2025 plans from Sustainable Stansted. They’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in getting involved in activities to combat climate change locally.
The Stansted Mountfitchet u3a updates us on its January meetings; about a daring RAF mission (16th) and a special paleobiology seminar (18th). Visitors and new members are welcome to join them. The Dunmow Art Group has a talk on the Great Bardfield artists (15th January) and holds regular weekly art meetings and has monthly visiting artists. Plus, The Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club reflects on its 65th anniversary year and has its next meeting on the 4th February and the Newport and District Flower Club has its next meeting on the 19th February; both clubs welcome visitors. Love meeting new people and exploring different cultures? Find out more about the Stansted-Rungis Twinning Association in an article about who they are and what they do; sounds fascinating.
Support 4 Sight is running its regular coffee mornings, to enable people to swap ideas, chat and look at assistive equipment and low vision aids. They run every last Friday in Takeley and every first and last Tuesday in Saffron Walden. Other charity updates include Let’s Talk Stansted! reminding us that their mission is to support people with their physical and mental wellbeing – they can provide courses, training and activity groups which include walking, open water swimming, football and gardening groups, yoga and relaxation classes and social get-togethers. We also hear from Danaher Animal Home, do you have space for Kim, Danaher’s “special golden oldie”? She has a stunning golden coat to match her title.
In addition, St Clare Hospice asks can you ‘Give the gift of time’ by becoming a Compassionate Neighbour? The Compassionate Neighbours programme matches trained volunteers with people in the community, helping to grow genuine friendships that enrich lives. Why not look inside your magazine to find out more about the activities, groups and charities I’ve highlighted in this letter? As well as about other groups too.
Additionally, there’s the regular school news for you to catch up on. We do hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you very much for your support and contributions.
With best wishes
