The Stansted Flyer Magazine February ’25 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
As I write it’s good to know that our daylight hours are gradually lengthening. Let’s hope we can all enjoy signs that spring is ahead, like when the snowdrops begin to appear. I love these beautiful, delicate and uplifting flowers. In this issue you’ll be able to catch up on a range of local community news and events, to use as the month progresses.
If you’d like to see snowdrops, The Gardens of Easton Lodge has several planned snowdrop open days in February. There are also many free self-guided walking routes from the Hundred Parishes Society, to help enable us to explore our local areas, and we have a feature article which explains what the Hundred Parishes is all about – fascinating! Family half term activities are taking place at Saffron Walden Museum and its current exhibition – “We Choose to go to the Moon” – is on until the 2nd March. Additionally, we hear from TouchPoint Active about free sessions each week, ranging from bootcamps to yoga, chair-based exercise to running.
Human Roots shares information about volunteer Alex, who in her own words “loves the community spirit and teamwork of the like-minded volunteers” and they’re always happy to welcome new volunteers. An inspiring article. Staying on an environmental theme Sustainable Stansted asks if you are wasting energy and money heating the space outside your house, rather than the people in it? The group says that this wasted energy can be viewed using a Thermal Imaging (TI) camera, which can help you to see the best ways to reduce or stop this heat loss. They’re holding an event in February, everyone welcome, and they share useful information online: www.facebook.com/groups/sustainablestansted Plus, the Essex Library Service and Love Essex are working together to bring us a collection of e-audio and e-books to help us learn more about waste, recycling and living a more sustainable lifestyle, all available on Borrow Box. Sounds very useful – you can find out more in your magazine.
Updates from other community and charity groups includes news from St Mary’s Church that the Stansted Scouts, Cubs and Beavers took part in a Christingle service last December and the Scouts are booked in for Renewal of Promises on the 27th April. Stansted Bowling Club is getting prepared for the 2025 season and volunteers are welcome to help prepare the green. The club would also be pleased to see new potential players. The Millers update us on the re-pointing work and would welcome any volunteers who could help with the Mill’s annual spring clean; it will re-open for the 2025 season at Easter. They offer membership at £10 a year for a family at one address, which includes free entry to the Windmill on Open Days.
We also find out that Lee, who is vision impaired, recently organised a Blindfold Football Penalty Challenge for Support 4 Sight. If you’d like to support this inspiring undertaking, the information is inside. Thank you to Linda for a Herts and Essex Border Centre update, regretfully the group will be closing. The oak tree, planted in 2019 in Hatfield Forest to commemorate their 50th anniversary, is thriving and stands for the approximate £140,000 which has been raised and donated to various local Trust properties. An incredible achievement.
Thank you for all your support and we hope you enjoy your Flyer.
With best wishes
