The Stansted Flyer Magazine December ’24 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
It’s incredible to be writing the December 2024 issue letter already! I hope the end of this year goes as well as possible. Your Flyer is packed with events and community updates, to take us through December and beyond.
Events and activities include the Winter Reading Challenge for children at Essex Libraries (Thursday 2nd January to Saturday 22nd February 2025) and all the libraries are hosting ‘Warm Welcomes’; you can drop by (no booking needed), enjoy a tea or coffee and utilise what your library has to offer.
We also find out about the St Clare Hospice Light up a Life services in December (more specific details are here: https://stclarehospice.org.uk/light-up-a-life).
Do you enjoy winter walks? Why not take a look at The Hundred Parishes Society website – www.hundredparishes.org.uk – it’s full of routes, ideas and information. The Fun Place on the Hill (Free Church Hall) welcomes all-age visitors and families every Friday and they’re holding a Christmas Event (20th December) which includes a special visitor! Plus, Saffron Walden Museum’s Object of the Month is themed around Christmas; the display will include a Princess Mary Christmas gift box, which was distributed to members of the British armed forces in 1914, during the First World War. It sounds a wonderful item to discover more about during a visit to the museum – and the shop may tempt you with Christmas gift ideas while you’re there!
St Mary’s Church tells us about the Christingle service for Stansted Scouts, Beavers, and Cubs; everyone is welcome. We hear from The Millers about the repointing the brickwork at the Mill. The project has started and this ongoing conservation work means they will not be able to stage Santa at the Mill this year. Santa will be around at other venues in the village over the festive season so there will be opportunities to meet up with him!
News from local groups includes practical and useful ideas from Sustainable Stansted to help us have a more sustainable Christmas and New Year and a report from Stansted Mountfitchet u3a on December events and a forthcoming talk in January about an RAF mission, launched from RAF Hunsdon in Hertfordshire in February 1944, which played a key role in the lead-up to D-Day. Plus, Human Roots recently teamed up with one of the Touchpoint cookery classes. The squash was donated by Human Roots and then given to all the attendees to try the recipe at home (you can find the recipe on the Touchpoint website).
Other charity updates include ‘Sweet Sandy’ who is looking for a new home. To find out more about her why not read the article from Danaher Animal Home in your Flyer? As the end of the year approaches Let’s Talk Stansted! reflects on the various events and activities they’ve organised and shared with the community and they look forward to reaching even more people in 2025. In addition, the TouchPoint Kids Christmas Gifts Appeal 2024 is currently taking place and everyone can play a part. You can find out more about it and how you can get involved here: www.justgiving.com/campaign/touchpoint-christmas-appeal-2024 We also have school news for you.
The Flyer team would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and thank you for all your support and contributions.
With best wishes
