Your August Flyer is packed with inspiring ideas of things to do and useful community information, to help everyone in your family make the most of this time of year.
Events include the Summer Reading Challenge for children, taking place in your local library until the 5th September. Children are challenged to read six library books over the summer, or do other reading-related activities, and are rewarded with stickers and a medal. Don’t miss out, pop into your local library. You’ll also be able to find out about all the other events and activities going on – for all ages. Plus, the Sir David Attenborough exhibition is still on at Saffron Walden Museum with plenty of events during the school holidays for children. I am personally looking forward to visiting this exhibition with my family before it closes in early September.
There’s a family fun day taking place at the Gardens of Easton Lodge (9th August) with games for everyone, like a traditional fete! The local Alpacas will also be there, who are very friendly. Plus, there will be a trail and craft activity for children. Another summertime activity could be to visit the Hundred Parishes Society website and choose one of their free self-guided walking routes; I always discover new things when I go on one of their lovely walks!
Sustainable Stansted shares practical tips about keeping cool in a very hot summer, by ‘passive cooling;’ – which is keeping your home comfortable using the building itself and what’s around it rather than electricity. It’s a very informative article.
We have an update from the Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club about their annual garden meeting. Are you interested in going to watch a floral demonstration by an expert, pick up some tips about caring for your flowers and the elements and principles of design? Why not come along to the Club (first Tuesday of the month except January, Manuden Community Centre). You don’t need to have any expertise or knowledge to enjoy watching flower arranging. Visitors are always welcome. Thank you too for the article from Stansted Business Forum. Their next breakfast networking meeting takes place on Friday 4th September, if you’d like to find out more.
The cat charity Toe Beans Cat Rescue has taken in an unusually large number of mums and babies, all with the same urgent request: “Got any food?” They are asking for long-term and casual fosterers as well as adopters ready to offer forever homes. They would love to hear from you if you can help. We also have an inspiring update from Support 4 Sight, with Becky Williams achieving a prestigious Gold Award at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham for her ‘Sensed, Not Seen’ garden. Designed to challenge traditional ideas of how a garden should be experienced, and to highlight the work of Support 4 Sight. Becky’s show garden celebrated accessibility by encouraging people to engage with nature through touch, scent, taste and sound.
Additionally, we hear from Stansted TouchPoint about the TouchPoint garden, with the garden volunteer team giving everything a final spruce as they prepare for the Anglia in Bloom competition! A chance to show how far the garden has come — not just in planting, but in community spirit and sustainability.
