The Stansted Flyer Magazine August ’25 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
With the height of summer upon us, I hope you can enjoy the longer daylight while we still have it and the wildlife around us. In fact, later in the evening on the middle day of this year (2nd July) I saw several roe deer on the move in the countryside; just beautiful. You’ll find plenty of information and events in your Flyer to take you through these school holiday and summer days.
At Saffron Walden Museum there are school holiday craft workshops taking place, alongside the exhibition “Wonders: 190 years of Saffron Walden Museum”. The 2025 Summer Reading Challenge is on until Saturday 6th September, so there’s still time to take part at your library! At the Gardens of Easton Lodge family fun day (17th August) there will be plenty of garden games as well as the Little Easton Alpacas. The Gardens are also open on Thursdays.
The Windmill Fete is on August Bank Holiday Monday. There will be inflatables, Robbie the Land Train, a BBQ run by the scouts, ice cream vans, traditional stalls, Teddy Bear Parachuting from the top of the mill and more, so don’t miss it! They would love to hear from anyone who is interested in helping at the fete. Let’s Talk Stansted! will be at the fete, so why not say hello and find out more about them and some of their activities like Muddy Walkers and The Veg Shed allotment group?
Sustainable Stansted will also be at the Windmill fete and then shortly after this, on the 6th September, they are holding a community nature afternoon. It sounds like it will be a very informative event. If you’re doing something to protect nature locally and would like to be involved in the event or in Sustainable Stansted more generally they would be pleased to hear from you.
Stansted u3a announces a new group activity of lawn bowls and sessions will take place at Stansted Bowls Club, with Bowls Club members offering guidance and support. They also tell us that on the 21st August Paul Chambers from Touchpoint will share an update on the project’s developments; visitors and prospective members are welcome to this u3a talk. Human Roots will be donating their harvest (once ready) to Touchpoint. Their aim is to put a bit back into the local community and new volunteers at their community allotment will always be welcome. Stansted Tennis Club shares tournament, summer tennis camp and junior and adult tennis session news – there is a lot going on this summer!
In 2024, the St Clare’s Hospice Forever Flowers campaign raised £7,000 and it has now returned with a limited-edition pink flower. To find out more and support this 2025 fundraising campaign you can visit www.stclarehospice.org.uk/foreverflowers Plus we’ve received an update about the Hospice’s Bereavement Café in Saffron Walden. This free drop-in support group is open to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one – whether recently or some time ago.
With the 80th Anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) on the 15th August, we also have information about a commemoration at the War Memorial in Castle Park, Bishop’s Stortford, at 10.50am. With your regular school news as well, we hope you enjoy this August issue. Thank you for your support.
With best wishes
