The Stansted Flyer Magazine August ’24 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your August issue and hopefully the chance to enjoy picnics, walks, cycle rides and more. I’m sure my family and I will do this too and make the most of the school summer holidays, which can seem long but end up going very quickly!
As you look at your Flyer you’ll be able to plan in event diary dates and catch up on local community news. The Windmill August Bank Holiday fete takes place on Monday 26th August, with attractions
for children, stalls, refreshments and more. For the latest details: www.facebook.com/Stansted.Windmill Stansted Mountfitchet Social Club updates us on its news, including August events (new members welcome). Saffron Walden Museum has summer holiday activities for accompanied children and a new exhibition. Daisy May’s Farm (Elsenham), a not for profit organisation, is currently open every day, with plenty to see and do!
The Summer Reading Challenge is on at your local library; Castle Park is holding an official free opening event, everyone welcome (1st September) and The Hundred Parishes Society has many free self-guided local walking routes nearby. We also hear from Mountfitchet Castle about rescued orphaned twin baby fallow deer, now being hand reared. They will, in time, be integrated into the herd at the Castle.
Club news includes the latest from Stansted Tennis Club about a recent 24 hour tennis marathon in memory of tennis coach Ollie Toms by friend and coach Ollie Clark from Dunmow Tennis Club, to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Thank you to Ollie Toms’ family for the latest update; close to £9,100 has been raised so far in this wonderful tribute (donations still welcome). There’s also a Stansted Summer Tennis Camp in the school holidays. The Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club is celebrating sixty five years and is still going strong; visitors always welcome and the King Edward VI Almshouses offer free illustrated talks to groups, where you can learn about their history in the heart of Saffron Walden since 1400, and plans for the future. Do read your magazine for details about all these groups, plus other groups too.
r our wonderful coach and good friend. You
We share positive news about five year old Arthur from Henham, who had surgery at Alder Hey in June. Find out more here: www.justgiving.com/campaign/arthursswordinthestone In further charity and community updates we hear about Support 4 Sight’s Quirky 30 Challenge, inspired by Leah Jackman’s idea to wear 30 Christmas jumpers throughout June, in honour of the charity’s 30th anniversary. Four members decided to take on the 334 steps of Big Ben and there are more challenges ahead. The charity would love to hear from you if you’d like to support them or find out how they can help you. Also, Danaher is looking for a home for Luan; information about this and the charity is in your Flyer.
GriefLine – the free helpline run by St Clare Hospice to offer emotional support – is in need of extra phone based volunteers for those struggling with their grief. Why not read volunteer Trudi’s inspiring story? Plus UCAN (Uttlesford Community Action Network) has many local volunteering opportunities – you could help make a real difference. Additionally, we have our regular school news. So do enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
