The Stansted Flyer Magazine April ’24 Update and Welcome

Letter from the Editor

It’s lovely to see so many spring flowers out, I especially like the yellow and purple colours. Perhaps we can enjoy more time outside now, maybe with family and friends if we are able to, and if the weather lets us!

Stansted Flyer Magazine April ’24 Updates

With plenty of ideas of things to do, plus the latest community news and information, we hope your April Flyer is useful. Activities include Open Days at Stansted Windmill; Thursday openings (from 4th April) and the first main season Open Day (21st April) at the Gardens of Easton Lodge; a new exhibition at the Saffron Walden Museum –  Plants: The Struggle for Survival (from the 30th March); a quiz evening hosted by Cllr Geof Driscoll supporting the Uttlesford Dementia Action Alliance (12th April); the new season re-opening of the Fry Art Gallery (from the 7th April) and a Rural Ramble and Trail Run supporting the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity (14th April).

News from local groups includes a fascinating insight from the Dunmow Rotary Club (which recently celebrated its own 75th anniversary) into the history of Rotary. Paul Harris, a young lawyer, moved to Chicago and set up a business network and with three friends the idea of Rotary was born (23rd February 1905), so called because meetings rotated between their offices. They realised their business acumen could help the local community and the very first project was a public toilet in Chicago. Now 119 years later there are 1.25 million Rotarians spread throughout virtually every country in the world. We also hear from Takeley Rotary Club about some of their environmental activities, with regular litter picks and community work in conjunction with The Wilderness Foundation. Plus, a quiz and Open Gardens are coming up. Both clubs would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in finding out more about them.

Stansted Tennis Club

Stansted Tennis Club have planted a Red Robin Tree in the gardens behind the courts with a plaque in memory of their ‘wonderful coach and good friend’ Ollie. The Club also shares updates further to its recent AGM. There are also other groups included inside your magazine.

Support 4 Sight’s employment service, Support 4 Employment, has secured a further five years funding from The National Lottery Community Fund. Over the past five years, Support 4 Employment, has engaged with over 300 blind and partially sighted people across Essex, building confidence and skills related to their working life and career possibilities. St Clare Hospice asks us to make our next cuppa count by hosting a Coffee, Cake & Care morning during April. All money raised will help the Hospice continue to support people who have received a life-limiting diagnosis. In addition, Let’s Talk Stansted! highlights that April is Stress Awareness Month – their monthly get together (30th April) will include discussing its impact, causes, coping strategies and supporting each other. Let’s Talk Stansted! shares information on some of its other events too.

Along with local school updates, we hear from St Mary’s Church in Stansted, about the champing season; bands to look forward to at the church, including The Post Floyd Dream (Pink Floyd tribute band – booking now!) and a This is my Theatre performance. Enjoy catching up on your community news and thank you for your support of the Flyer.

With best wishes
