The Stansted April Flyer ’23
Welcome to your April issue of the Stansted and Dunmow Flyer. In this first issue of a new year, we hear from Stansted in Bloom. We also have club updates from Stansted Tennis Club and Stansted Junior Cricket Club. And we also catch up on local school news and local groups.
Letter from the Editor Stansted April Edition
As we’re now officially in British Summer Time we can look forward to much more daylight. In fact we won’t get a sunset any earlier than 6pm until well into October; a nice thought! With a spring in our step we welcome you to this April issue of the Flyer and the community resources, information and events that are inside.
Stansted in Bloom
On a floral theme we’d like to thank Isla, her family and Stansted in Bloom, for enabling us to share Isla’s winning photo (from a competition last year) on our March 2023 cover. There’s still time (until 20th May) to enter the young person’s writing competition – part of the Anglia in Bloom Action Group’s preparation for the Stansted in Bloom 2023 entry – with prizes and winning entries being published in the Flyer. The Rotary Club of Takeley hopes to set up a Takeley and Little Canfield Open Gardens – can anyone open their garden on the 25th June (2-4pm)? It’s lovely to share these community garden news items this month.
Local Events Stansted April
Forthcoming local events include open days at the Mill (Easter Sunday and Monday, 1.30pm to 5.30pm); The Gardens of Easton Lodge’s first Tudor Day (Sunday 23rd April) and Rural Ramble for the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity (Saturday 29th April) plus the Stansted Bowling Club’s Open Day (Saturday 13th May, 10.00am to 4.00pm). The Coronation Fete is on Sunday 7th May (1pm to 6pm) at the Rec. There’s also a Coronation celebration on Sworder’s Field on Saturday 6th May. The Wind in the Willows will be at St Mary’s Church on the 27th May (3pm to 4.30pm). So much to choose from, with even more things to do inside!
Charity News Stansted and Dunmow
In charity news, as well as a new Wellbeing Hub, St Clare Hospice has celebrated the fifth anniversary of Compassionate Neighbours – which aims to help tackle loneliness within local communities. They’d love to hear from you if you’d be interested in volunteering. TouchPoint in Stansted (with its 100+ volunteers) holds a wide range of free community clubs; including breakfast and teatime; yoga; walking; ‘Sunday Afternoon at the Movies’ and a Bereavement Café. Why not read more about these charities in your magazine?
Club Updates April
We also have club updates from Stansted Tennis Club and Stansted Junior Cricket Club, both have active club programmes and welcome new members and community support. Stansted Business Forum celebrates 10 years and has been supporting the local community in many ways. The Household Energy Saving Group of Sustainable Stansted shares practical tips with us and there’s a call to artists (over 18) to submit their work to “The Uttlesford Open 2023”, Saffron Walden Museum’s first open call art exhibition (do check the submission criteria).
On a different note, Lynda from St Mary’s Church shares an incredible story about John and Ellen Rogers, from an ongoing churchyard restoration project. It’s captivating and heartfelt.
In school and education news we have an Uttlesford Community Safety Partnership visit and World Book Day activities (Forest Hall); sports, reading and staff news (St Mary’s) and the results from Dunmow and Takeley Rotary Youth competitions (Helena Romanes).
Enjoy catching up on these articles and more. Thank you for your support.
With best wishes
