As I write this welcome letter, I hope the summer has been going as well as possible and that we can enjoy a good start to early autumn. With a new term for those in education and many local groups now running a full programme of activities, you’ll find inspiration from the community updates in this issue, to take you through September and beyond.
Events include the Town Walk and Community Connections Day (28th September) organised by the Town Council, where local community groups and organisations will be giving advice and information, all free to attend. We find out that the first phase of the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall extension will be opening up! As well as all the Hall’s shows and activities, SMHT are working alongside Herts County Council, Step2skills to bring adult education courses (from September) and the new season for Sawbo Cinema begins on the 15th September. Free monthly Digital Skills sessions are now running in Sawbridgeworth library (as well as other regular activities), so why not pop in there?
The Canal & River Trust are inviting residents to join them at Sheering Mill Lock (21st September) from 10am to help make the area look its best. This is a family orientated event; all equipment will be provided. Please bring a picnic. That same afternoon, at the Bullfields Centre, is the Sawbridgeworth Repair Café and that evening, at 7pm, Sustainable Sawbridgeworth is running a Community Veggie Feast at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. Tickets (£6.00) at: www.Veggiefeast.Eventbrite.co.uk
If you enjoy walking and cycling (count me in on loving walking!) as well as all the local routes on our doorstep, the Beds and Herts Historic Churches Trust is holding ‘Bike ‘n Hike’ (14th September). You get sponsored to visit historic churches by cycling, walking, or any mode of transport on a route of your choice. Half the sponsor money goes to the church you name. There’s also ‘The Great Big Walk for Herts’ (28th September) where Helping Herts is organising a range of walk routes, to support young people across Herts.
By the time you read this The High Wych Scarecrow Festival may well have taken place (7th and 8th September this year) If so, I hope those who visited, took part and organised the event, enjoyed it. Of course, we’ll also be able to look forward to next year’s event!
In other group updates the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society shares news and information on forthcoming talks, including Charlie Haycock’s ‘History of the English Language’ (21st September). Sounds fascinating. Why not book one or more of their autumn talks? www.sbwhistory.com We also hear from the Town Twinning Association about a recent garden party and exchange visits ahead, and from the Sawbridgeworth WI about their annual summer lunch and competition. Plus, if you’re a table tennis player, we have a local club looking for new members to join and Whoosh Explore updates us on paddler training courses, fitness sessions and after school sessions. All these groups would be very pleased to hear from you.
With a feature article from The Hundred Parishes Society (their website www.hundredparishes.org.uk has more than 100 free self guided walk routes) we also share school news. Do enjoy your issue and thank you to everyone who contributes to the Flyer, we appreciate your support.
With best wishes
