The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine October ’26

Letter from the Editor

As I write your October issue welcome letter I hope we can all enjoy the autumn colours and that half term goes well for everyone it’s relevant to. Plus, don’t forget our clocks go back on Sunday 25th October!

Your autumn events and community news includes a free Energy Saving Workshop at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall (19th November). Booking is essential. There are also many other events at the Hall, such as the Halloween Disco and the Christmas Family Disco and live music nights. As a community charity Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall looks forward to welcoming you: www.smht.org.uk

Sawbridgeworth Library tells us that 173 children signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge, with 90 finishers. The town mayor, Cllr Angus Parsad-Wyatt, presented medals and many children also completed the Town Trail. Special Gruffalo Storytime sessions are ahead; do check social media and the library for the dates. As the library is getting its windows refurbished they will be shut from the 28th September to the 9th October but they will soon be back! Bishop’s Stortford library has a range of activities and events happening during October, including half term. We also find out that Debbie McGowan is holding her second annual fundraising organ recital at St James Church High Wych (24th October, 7.30pm).

Nostalgia Day takes place in Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall (7th November). Vehicles will be leaving the Memorial Hall at 10.30am for a service at the Airfield Memorial, where anyone is welcome to lay a wreath or poppy. On returning to the Hall there will be a short dedication. Representatives from No.2 Squadron RAF Marham and the Town Mayor will be joining us on this occasion. The stars of the afternoon will be young people from Diverse Performing Arts, together with Lisa Hammond, with the theme of “Strictly 50s”. Free entry with donations to Help for Heroes. Sawbridgeworth Local History Society will be announcing the winners of the competition ”What does Local History mean to me” and will also have a display with their latest book “Sawbridgeworth Then and Now”.

We also have news from other groups including Sawbridgeworth WI, who at one of their recent meetings listened to speaker Aruna about her inspiring collage making to ‘convey joy of living and the good things of life’. Sustainable Sawbridgeworth with the help of volunteers at Sawbridgeworth Library, is re-launching the free Thermal Imaging Camera loan scheme for the winter season. The cameras, which must be booked in advance, are available to residents of Sawbridgeworth and immediately adjacent parishes. A similar scheme operates in the other towns in East Herts. Plus, H2 Photographic Society tell us they meet every Thursday, alternating between Much Hadham Village Hall and on Zoom. All these groups would be pleased to tell you more about them.

Thank you to the High Wych Scarecrow Festival team for their report from the 10th anniversary event; they say a huge thank you to everyone who created, volunteered, visited and supported this very special weekend! I was very impressed by all I saw. We have updates from the Mayor (including Sheering Mill Lane) and Town Clerk (diary date 28th November for the Christmas lights switch-on) and also from Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale at Great St Mary’s.

Thank you very much for your support and we hope you enjoy your October Flyer.

With best wishes
