The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine October ’25
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your October issue, packed with community information and activities. I hope we can all enjoy the autumn colours and don’t forget that our clocks go back on Sunday 26th October!
Things to do include community events at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. The Hall is a registered charity and non-profit organisation, run for the benefit of the community. We’ve also been told about an evening of mystery at the Hall, based on an “Office Party” (11th October), to work out “whodunit”. Sounds intriguing! All proceeds from this event will go to Great St Mary’s Church.
Nostalgia Day (8th November) will include a service at the Airfield Memorial, a short dedication at the Memorial Hall, entertainment and displays by Sawbridgeworth Local History Society and the Royal British Legion. The event will be commemorating VE and VJ Day and also the 300th anniversary of the founding of Rivers Nursery. If you or anyone you know was at a VE Day party in Sawbridgeworth in 1945 you are invited to make contact (details in your magazine) to be sent a personal invitation. In addition, Town Clerk Chris Hunt tells us about the Remembrance Parade and service (9th November) to which residents of all ages are invited.
Entries for The Rivers 300 Children’s Art Competition, for those 18 years old or younger, are due between the 1st and 5th November 2025. If you see this in time, come with your friends or parents to Apple Day for inspiration: www.rhso.co.uk/300years We’re also reminded about the Christmas Lights Switch-On (29th November).
In local community and group news Sawbridgeworth Repair Café has celebrated its third birthday. Volunteer Bill says “For me, the Repair Café is a place that fosters community spirit, reduces waste, and encourages practical skills that are too often overlooked. I’m proud to be a part of it.” David Royle updates us on the Sawbridgeworth Homes for Ukraine support group, who organised food collections and collected children’s clothing, which will go to the UK AID charity in Felstead for onward shipment to Ukraine. The Group is very grateful to people for their generosity and to the Co-op for hosting the food collections. Sawbridgeworth WI updates us on meetings, a monthly craft group and pub lunches! New members are very welcome.
In charity and volunteering news The Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro Centres always have volunteering opportunities, both on a regular or ad-hoc basis. Julie, a volunteer at Sawbridgeworth Community Library, talks about her role and says new library volunteers would be welcome. We have updates from Isabel Hospice about their Christmas at the Manor fundraising event (12th November) and the Lights of Love Service in Sawbridgeworth (13th December) and Bishop’s Stortford (30th November). All these charity and community groups would be pleased to hear from you; find out more inside your Flyer.
Thank you to the High Wych Scarecrow Festival organisers for an inspiring update after this recent community event. Plus, we have your Sawbridgeworth Town Council community news, from Councillor Angus Parsad-Wyatt, the Town Clerk and the Mayor, with tributes to former Councillors Fred Parr and Norma Symonds. In addition, your monthly article from Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale at Great St Mary’s and back to school news is in this issue. We hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
