The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine October ’24

Letter from the Editor

It’s the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ (Ode to Autumn by Keats) so let’s hope we get some sunny autumn days and can make the most of our current daylight hours, ahead of the clocks changing on the last Sunday in October. As always, you’ll find plenty of community updates and things to do in this issue.

The Sawbridgeworth Library

The Sawbridgeworth Library has updated us on some of its events, including monthly Digital Skills sessions, run by Community Alliance and the ‘Needles and Pins’ craft group. Also, their Warm Space initiative will be returning this year, so why not pop in and find out more about these and other activities in your library?

Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall Trust

We discover that Sawbo Cinema, set up as a community cinema in 2017 by the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall Trust (SMHT), is now showing its autumn programme of films. You can find out more here: www.smht.org.uk/sawbo-cinema as well as search for other events happening at SMHT. We also get an advance diary date – the Christmas lights switch on will be the 30th November! (thank you for this information Chris, in your Clerk’s Corner)

Club and group news includes an update from the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society on forthcoming talks: The History of Terlings Park (31st October) and explaining about Freemasons in Sawbridgeworth (28th November). The Society’s 2025 plans are being forged, to include planning events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of WW11.

Nostalgia Day takes place on Saturday 9th November.  The event includes a service at the Airfield Memorial, Diverse Performing Arts, books and displays by Sawbridgeworth Local History Society.  Free entry but cash donations please for the Royal British Legion who will also have a display.

Thank you to David Royle for a report on ‘Kyiv Classic Accordion Duo: Concert for Ukraine’. The audience enjoyed Igor Sayenko and Olekseii Kolomets’ return visit to the Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church in August. David adds “Thanks are due to Gary Hanson and his team of volunteers for hosting the concert once again.” £550 was raised for local charity UK-AID www.uk-aid.org We also have an informative update from The Hundred Parishes Society and news from Sustainable Sawbridgeworth on topics including the Town Council’s second Energy Hub and ‘No Dig’ gardening (which anyone can follow on the smallest or largest of areas). Intrigued? You can find details about all these groups, and more, in your magazine.

Sheila Henderson from the charity Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro Centres, which provide specialised nursing care and rehabilitation for adults with complex neurological conditions, shares information about the Friends and news of a grant from Sawbridgeworth Town Council, which has enabled them to buy new musical instruments. Plus, there’s a report from The Scarecrow Committee, on the success of the recent annual High Wych Scarecrow Festival. The Committee extend their heartfelt gratitude to all involved and are “thrilled that this local tradition continues to resonate with participants and visitors alike, drawing people together in a celebration of community”.

As well as the Mayor’s report, which includes recent events such as Fun on the Field and the Sawbridgeworth Gardens and Allotments Autumn Show, we have school news and an update that the Sawbridgeworth 2025 Calendar has arrived. Thank you for your support; we hope you enjoy your October Flyer.

With best wishes
