The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine November ’26

Letter from the Editor

The end of the year seems to be coming so quickly now. I hope your November Flyer will offer useful information and ideas of things to do as we move into a time of remembrance and then the festive season.

Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale from Great St Mary’s church and the Mayor both remind us that the town’s service and parade for Remembrance Day is on Sunday 8th November. Also, Sawbridgeworth Local History Society has previously let us know about Nostalgia Day, which takes place on Saturday 7th November.

The annual Christmas Lights Switch-On is Saturday 28th November, from 4pm to 8pm, with festive entertainment, shopping and family fun. A special visit from Father Christmas is planned and the Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, with local schoolchildren and community representatives, will count to the official switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights. The event is free to attend.

We also have advance notice of the annual Carols on Fair Green (Christmas Eve, 6.30pm). Earlier this year Sawbridgeworth and District Rotary members decided to wind up the club after nearly half a century of activity. So, Carols on Fair Green will now be in the hands of Great St Mary’s Church and Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church. A special half hour of traditional carols led by the choir and accompanied by the brass band.

Sawbridgeworth and District Rotary has also distributed the group’s final funds across a number of charities, all the details all of which are included inside your magazine. The retiring Club members thank the community, the Town Council and The Flyer.

Other group and charity news includes an update from Isabel Hospice about its Lights of Love service in Sawbridgeworth at Sayesbury Manor (12th December, 4pm) to remember the lives of those who are no longer with us. The Hospice has also launched The Giftmas Challenge, inviting us to choose preloved and make Christmas more sustainable. We also hear from David Royle about the Homes for Ukraine support group collection for UK-Aid in September at the Co-op, which was well supported, and a car load of bedding, warm clothing etc was also collected. The next collection at the Co-op is likely to be in January for their next trip to Ukraine in March.

We have a fascinating Lighthouse related report from Sawbridgeworth WI and the next Sawbridgeworth Local History meeting (26th November, Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall) is about the history of the Women of Bletchley Park. Additionally, we find out that the recent Air‑Mazing Saturday at Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Field, organised by the Town Council, was a lively mix of activities with many local groups in attendance. Sawbridgeworth Town Council thanks all schools, pupils and families who took part in this year’s Travel Challenge for helping make our town’s air cleaner, healthier and safer.

In this month’s report the Mayor reminds us about the forthcoming Sawbridgeworth charity Christmas cards and 2027 calendar. These will help raise funds for the Mayor’s chosen charity for the year, the Sawbridgeworth Community First Responders. Plus, Chris Hunt in his Clerk’s Corner, encourages everyone to explore what our community hubs have to offer, including Bullfields, the Memorial Hall, the Library, the Hailey Centre, sports clubs, youth groups and children’s organisations.

I hope you enjoy your magazine and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
