The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine November ’25
Letter from the Editor
As I write your November welcome letter it hardly seems possible that we are this far through the year. In this issue you’ll find information about festive/ winter events and local community updates. Plus, if you’re interested in making the most of the outdoors, why not explore Pishiobury Park, other open spaces and our riverside location – perhaps with a chance to still catch some late autumn colours!
Events include the Christmas Lights and Fayre (29th November). Sawbridgeworth Town Clerk Chris Hunt tells us: “It’s a wonderful opportunity to kick off the festive season, meet your councillors, enjoy the stalls, and say hello to Father Christmas.” Don’t forget to visit the library at the Fayre, their usual second-hand book stall will be there; all advance book donations would be gratefully received. Chris has also previously reminded us about the Remembrance Parade and service with all residents being invited.
If you see this in time the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society has its annual Nostalgia Day event, with the date and details included in their report in this issue. You can also find out more about the Society here: www.sbwhistory.com
Great St Mary’s Church shares its monthly service details along with our update from Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale, plus information about a Remembrance Afternoon ‘Tea, Tour, Tunes’ event (16th November). You can just turn up, there is a suggested donation and all proceeds go to Great St Mary’s Church. Also, the annual Christmas Tree Festival at Great St Mary’s is coming soon (6th-7th December).
Staying on the Christmas theme, the Rotary Club invites us to ‘Carols on Fair Green’ (24th December, 6.30pm) and asks if there are volunteers—individuals, couples, or families—who may be able to help with light stewarding duties. The details about this are in your Flyer.
There are a couple of events to highlight nearby in Bishop’s Stortford – their annual Christmas Fayre (6th December) and a concert by the Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society and Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia (also on the 6th December). Amongst everything I’ve written so far, there seems to be a wide variety of events and activities to choose from!
In local community and group news Sawbridgeworth WI updates us on a recent meeting which had an intriguing colour theme, plus tells us the monthly craft group has produced over 70 poppies to be sent to the Southend Pier for their Remembrance Appeal. The Rivers300 Apple Day celebration included a discussion about the important discovery of a new Rivers apple cultivar and a reminder about the Children’s Art Competition. Find out more here: www.rhso.co.uk/300years
The Sawbridgeworth Twinning Association share news about a recent event where they hosted 25 guests from Bry-sur-Marne, the 52nd year of their twinning link. In addition, Sustainable Sawbridgeworth has launched a new, free, Thermal Imaging Camera loan scheme. Local residents can pick up and drop off at Sawbridgeworth library and, amongst other things, the camera can help you identify areas where your house is losing heat.
We also have another reminder about the Isabel Hospice Lights of Love Services in Sawbridgeworth (13th December) and Bishop’s Stortford (30th November) and you’ll find your Sawbridgeworth Town Council community news, including updates from the Mayor, Town Clerk and Councillor Dawn Newell. Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy your magazine.
With best wishes
