The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine May ’25
Letter from the Editor
It’s lovely to write this letter knowing longer days will continue to stretch out in front of us for some time. My family and I enjoy springtime walks and I’m sure I’ll take some photos! Perhaps it’s a time to visit Pishiobury Park or The Hundred Parishes Society website for walking route ideas?
Your May issue has all the usual local events and community news, to keep you informed up to and beyond the half term week. You may well have been to the May Fayre, highlighted in our April issue as it takes place early in the month, and Town Clerk Chris talks about the VE Day 80 event again this time (8th May) which includes a display in the Town Council Offices (6th – 10th May, 10am – 4pm) from the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society. There will also be a Society talk (29th May) on ‘Ukraine and the war with Russia’ by Dr. Felix Schnell. Thank you to David Royle who has sent in a report this month from the Sawbridgeworth Homes For Ukraine Support Group, highlighting key events and activities; it’s very informative.
Do you know what a Hublet is? The Sawbridgeworth Community Library explains all and it sounds an incredibly useful device! Why not pop into the library and try it for yourself? Other events include the Sawbridgeworth Tennis Club Open Tennis day (11th May) where there will be free play and free coaching by qualified LTA coaches. The Big Breakfast is on Saturday 31st May in Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, supporting Christian Aid. This is followed by the annual River Day, also on the 31st May, at Sheering Lock – there will be plenty to and see and do for all ages.
Additionally, the Rivers 300 Adults Art Competition is taking place. A call out to people who simply enjoy creating or professionals. Use the Orchard and its flora and fauna and/or its working history to inspire your work. Submissions are in mid-June and the exhibition and prize-giving is in July. It sounds fascinating. We are also reminded of the Community Art Group at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, as well as about new classes and events in May. If you like singing, the Sawbridgeworth Community Choir would love to welcome you on Monday evenings at the Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club. You’re very welcome to turn up on the night – it is for all levels and no audition is needed. Why not find out more about these activities and events in your Flyer?
This month we hear from Paul, who moved to Sawbridgeworth four years ago with his wife Toni. He shares a very inspiring story about volunteering at Mutts in Distress and says: “To witness the rehabilitation work that goes on never ceases to amaze me.” Thank you Paul for sharing your story and the lovely photo of you, Toni and your beautiful rescue GSD, Sky.
We also have a full report from the current Mayor Cllr Reece Smith, who shares many memorable community highlights across his Mayoral year; he also wishes the next Mayor all the very best. Thank you for all your updates for the Flyer! Plus Leventhorpe shares a thought provoking report about two teachers who visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust.
Thank you for all your support and I hope you enjoy this month’s issue.
With best wishes
