The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine March ’25

Letter from the Editor

With the clocks moving forward by an hour at the end of March (don’t forget!), it really is starting to feel more like spring. Let’s hope we can get out and enjoy some fresh air if we’d like to.

You’ll find local things to do and community news in your issue, to keep you up to date. Events include the Sawbridgeworth Town Twinning quiz (15th March) and the next Sawbridgeworth Local History Society meeting (27th March) when Sarah from Hertfordshire Archive Local History will talk about Remarkable Women in Hertfordshire History. The Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, a registered charity, tells us about its schedule of live music acts including an Oasis tribute (8th March) and classic soul music (21st March). Plus, there’s much more!

The Rivers Heritage Orchard next Rivers 300 event is ‘Celebration Day’ (26th April, High Wych Memorial Hall). If you’d like to volunteer at the Orchard you’d be very welcome, they meet on the first Sunday of the month. Did you know that the Conference pear was created in Sawbridgeworth by Thomas Rivers? Thank you to our Mayor for sharing this fascinating fact in his report!

Sawbridgeworth Community Library

Sawbridgeworth Community Library holds regular Storytime sessions (cuppa for the parents/carers). Would you like to join the Baby Rhyme Time volunteer team? Please get in touch with them if you would like to know more. There are many other reasons to visit your local library too. Chris Hunt in his Clerk’s Corner reminds us about the Hailey Centre which offers a wide range of activities for the over 55s.

On the 8th May 2025 there will be Sawbridgeworth events to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, commemorating the end of World War II in Europe. From the 5th May there will be a History Society exhibition in the council offices. On the 8th May there will be wreath-laying ceremonies, a grand parade (6.30pm) from Great St. Mary’s Church and activities, music and food stalls that celebrate the history of the era, then the lighting of beacons outside the council offices. A wonderful tribute on this historically significant occasion.

Club and Group news includes an update from All Sorts Sawbridgeworth who run groups at Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club, providing a service for people with dementia. Sawbridgeworth WI reports on its recent meetings and events and invites visitors to join them – they meet on the third Tuesday of each month at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall.

Thank you to Isabel Hospice for sharing the news that over £9,000 was raised from Christmas at the Manor. Barbara Doherty MBE President of Isabel Hospice thanked all the supporters, the money will allow the charity to continue to give special care to patients and their families across eastern Hertfordshire.  In other charity updates we hear from Jane about her next quiz, which has a food theme! In aid of Teenage Cancer Trust, find out inside how to get your copy (£2), or pop into Nisa in town.

Sawbridgeworth Swifts ask us if we’re interested in having a Swift box on our property? They can be contacted via the Sawbridgeworth Swifts Facebook page. Swift boxes are a great way to help provide alternative nest sites (there’s a small charge to cover supply and installation of the box). We hope you enjoy reading this early springtime issue and thank you for all your support.

With best wishes
