Letter from the Editor
As we move into early summer, with maximum daylight hours in front of us, you’ll find plenty of events, activities and community news here to help you make the most of June and beyond!
River Day is back for 2026. Sawbridgeworth Town Council is working with the Canal & River Trust to bring us this free family friendly community event (27th June) at Sheering Mill Lock. We also find out that Sustainable Sawbridgeworth is hosting a special screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing (25th June). The film explores how restoring nature, improving home energy efficiency, and shifting to cleaner technologies can save us money while strengthening our community. Tickets are free of charge. The group is also running ‘Community Veggie Feast’ night again (11th July).
The Summer Reading Challenge begins from Saturday 4th July, so why not pop into the library to find out more about this, as well as the other events and activities that they offer? Also, in Bishop’s Stortford, the Carnival Parade and Fun Day is coming up (20th June) along with open air productions at Hatfield Forest from June to August (Othello; Pinocchio; The Tale of Peter Rabbit).
High Wych resident Sean speaks to us after completing the London Marathon in aid of Bowel Cancer UK having lost his wife to the illness. Reflecting on the day Sean said “What an incredible rollercoaster! The energy and comradeship amongst runners and spectators got me over the line.” Sean previously hosted a community coffee morning in the High Wych Memorial Hall in February going on to raise £10,000 towards vital bowel cancer research. What an inspiration. If you’d like to support Sean: www.justgiving.com/page/sean-oconnor We also have an update from The Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro Centres. They would welcome hearing from local bands or performers, as well as from volunteers who could add something to the lives of people living with brain injuries.
The organisers of the Sawbridgeworth May Fayre share a report on the 2026 event and said: “A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers, and everyone behind the scenes who worked so hard to make the event happen”. I was there for some of the afternoon – it was great to chat to local community groups and see the town filled with community spirit.
The Sawbridgeworth Local History Society reaches its 10th anniversary. The aim of the Group to research, collect, record and preserve the heritage of our town and the surrounding area. They are organising a history competition for schools with the title ‘What local history means to me’. Deadline for submission is 31st August and winners will be announced at the annual Nostalgia Day event on the 7th November. Thank you to Sawbridgeworth WI for their monthly update and new members are always welcome. Additionally, we have the first report from the new Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, Councillor Angus Parsad-Wyatt. “It is an honour to be writing to you for the first time as your Mayor…My focus for the year ahead is ‘Civic Pride’.” The Mayor also tells us that his chosen charity is the Sawbridgeworth Community First Responder Group (CFR) – volunteers who rush to medical emergencies and provide urgent care until the ambulance arrives, doing life-saving work in and around Sawbridgeworth.
Thank you for your support and enjoy your magazine.
With best wishes
