The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine June ’25
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your June issue of the Flyer and doesn’t it feel like we’re at the gateway to summer? I hope you’ll find your magazine full of useful ideas, events and inspiration.
The Hundred Parishes Society share an article on parks, woods and gardens and tell us that June is the month when many private gardens open to the public. You can find details in the What’s On section of their website: www.hundredparishes.org.uk Sounds well worth a look to me.
Events in this issue include a special colouring in activity in the Sawbridgeworth Community Library, to celebrate 100 years of Hertfordshire Libraries, and the summer reading challenge starts in July. The library is also asking if anyone can help volunteer at their Baby Rhyme Time activity? Sustainable Sawbridgeworth will be at Bell Street car park on the 21st June for Clean Air Day, why not pop along? Plus, the Bishop’s Stortford Carnival is also on this date. A concert by the Harmonaires (Great St Mary’s Church, 5th July) will be raising funds for Isabel Hospice. Renée would like to thank everyone who supported their Isabel Hospice stall at the May Fayre, it raised around £400.
A talk on the History of Terlings Park by Kirsty Elliott will take place at the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society meeting (26th June) and the group’s new publication ‘High Wych and Sawbridgeworth in World War 2’ is available online www.sbwhistory.com or at meetings. We’re all invited to enter the Sawbridgeworth Autumn Show, why not send for your show schedule? There’s a “How to” list as well.
The Sawbridgeworth May Fayre event organisers, the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, say a huge thank you to everyone involved in this successful event and have sent in a report. Sawbo Sessions will take place at the Memorial Hall (25th July); this annual local band night was launched by Maddy and then also Dawn. Their families and friends are committed to continuing this in their memory, raising funds for cancer charities.
Sawbridgeworth Town Council update us on the events they organised to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. This included tributes, wreath-laying, readings, Great St Mary’s bell ringers, a parade, an exhibition and Sawbridgeworth’s Mayor at this time, Cllr Reece Smith, delivering the VE Day Proclamation. There was also a beacon lighting and singing. We have our first monthly article from the 2025-2026 Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, Cllr Salvatore Pagdades, who is “deeply honoured to be elected as your new Mayor. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and am looking forward to serving our wonderful town over the coming year.” Thank you to the Town Council for our regular updates; you can also read Chris Hunt’s Town Clerk’s report inside.
In local charity news the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity shop in town invite those interested to call in to find out about the volunteering opportunities they have. The Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro centres update us on their volunteer news, saying how grateful they are. Additionally, further to the loss of an immediate family member, a local charity plant sale is running until September, to help raise funds for – and awareness of – Pancreatic Cancer. These charities would be pleased to see or hear from you.
I hope you enjoy this month’s issue and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
