Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your July issue. It’s full of local events and community information to help you make the most of the summer!
Sawbridgeworth Library reminds us about the Summer Reading Challenge (4th July – 5th September).
This year’s theme is “Read to the Beat”, linking the enjoyment of reading to a musical vibe.
The library will also be running its usual treasure hunt, a drawing competition and children’s craft sessions every Thursday afternoon (23rd July to 27th August).
Sustainable Sawbridgeworth’s ‘Community Veggie Feast’ night is happening this month (11th July). Find out more about the Group here: www.sustainablesawbridgeworth.org There are also many regular activities and events at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall which includes the forthcoming Gardens Show (5th September). Other activities nearby include The Bish Bash Music Festival (Sworders Field, 17th and 18th July) and a special exhibition about Sir David Attenborough and his work (Saffron Walden Museum, until the 6th September).
In charity news Jane’s 2026 quiz has raised a record-breaking £3,200, supporting Teenage Cancer Trust, bringing the total raised since 2013 to £22,000. Plus, we discover that the Homes for Ukraine Group had another successful food and toiletries collection at the Co-op, which they have delivered to UK Aid in Felsted for onward shipment to Ukraine.
Isabel Hospice is running its annual ‘Donate to Feel Great campaign’ in July, which encourages us to turn our summer clear-outs into support for local hospice care and Citizens Advice East Herts highlights resources and information available through its website: https://citizensadviceeastherts.org.uk They provide face to face sessions at Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church on Tuesday mornings.
The Sawbridgeworth Local History Society shares information about Christina’s recent talk from the Forge Museum and its next speakers (30th July) will look at how the Epping and Ongar Railway has been given a new lease of life by dedicated volunteers. All Sorts Dementia Group remind us that they provide activities around the Cognitive Stimulation Therapy while loved ones gain breaks from their caring roles (Monday and Thursday, Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club). Volunteer support would be welcome.
Sawbridgeworth WI tell us about a recent talk by Graham Knight from the Sawbridgeworth Swifts. Did you know swifts can fly for 10 months without stopping? Residents can apply for swift boxes and specially designed bricks to encourage the swifts to nest. The WI Group welcomes visitors to their meetings. Also, thank you to Corinne, from Tidy Up Sawbridgeworth, who has sent us a report about the local ‘Litter Heroes’ who she said do an incredible job while facing an ‘inexhaustible supply’ of rubbish.
We also have an article from the Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, Councillor Angus Parsad-Wyatt, and he invites us to join in the Mayor’s Community Action Day on Saturday 11th July (and later that same day Mandefest takes place at Mandeville Primary School). You can read more from the Mayor inside your Flyer. In addition, Cllr Salvatore Pagdades tells us about the Annual Civic Awards in May at the end of his Mayoral year. He presented his chosen charities, the Hailey Centre and the 309 Sawbridgeworth Air Cadets, with a cheque for £2526.14 each during an evening of celebration.
All the groups and charities I have mentioned in my letter would be pleased to hear from you. Enjoy this summer issue and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
