The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine July ’25

Letter from the Editor

As I write your July welcome letter I can’t quite believe we’re heading to the longest school holidays, let’s hope the weather is good and we can make the most of summer! There are plenty of things to do and lots of information inside for you.

Events this time include the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge at your library, this year with an outdoors and nature theme: www.hertfordshire.gov..uk/SummerReadingChallenge Plus, Sawbridgeworth Library is running a “decorate a plate” competition and a treasure hunt around the town, and a weekly craft activity. We also find out that the Rivers 300 Adult Art Competition has an exhibition and prize giving in the Council Chamber (10th July); all are welcome! Sawbo Sessions annual band night, which continues in the memory of Maddy and Dawn raising funds for cancer charities, is on the 25th July at the Memorial Hall. There are so many other events and activities taking place at the Hall – it’s worth having a look at their website! www.smht.org.uk

In addition, Sawbridgeworth Tennis Club is having an Open Pickleball day with free play. If you haven’t tried Pickleball before, or want to improve your play, this is a great opportunity – it’s ideal for families and as a social activity. Plus, why not make the most of Pishiobury Park and other local outdoor spaces? www.eastherts.gov.uk/sports-leisure-and-parks/local-parks-and-open-spaces

Fun on the Field is coming up on the 30th August! You can find out more about events inside your Flyer.

In local group news Sawbridgeworth Local History Society shares information about its recent VE Day exhibition, where over 200 people came to look at the exhibition, including someone who had worked on the Mosquito aircraft. Their next talk is on the 24th July and new members are always welcome. We also hear from Sustainable Sawbridgeworth about their attendance at the River Day event, where residents and visitors were given a range of tips for saving water and you can check out your water footprint and order free water saving devices here: www.affinitywater.co.uk/saveourstreams/devices Also, thank you to Emily, a student at Leventhorpe, who has written about a recent school trip to Spain, which included touring the area, speaking the language, seeing coastal scenery, and learning about the area’s history. Sounded an excellent cultural trip!

We discover that the recent annual Big breakfast event raised over £1,500 for Christian Aid; the organisers say thank you to all involved. Helping Herts Week takes place in July, where communities come together to raise money for local children and young people. Plus, the Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth Street Pastors tell us what they do. Street Pastors are always part of a team and are fully trained volunteers. Why not find out more in your magazine?

Sawbridgeworth Town Council share updates with us, including Councillor Pagdades, the new Mayor, with his monthly column; Chris Hunt’s Town Clerk’s news; a report from Councillor John Rider and an article from Councillor Reece Smith about an incredible £3,940 raised for two youth charities during his Mayoral year in 2024-25. In addition, we share the news that local environmental advocate Bob Reed has been awarded the prestigious Freedom of the Town by Sawbridgeworth Town Council, recognising his years of dedication to conservation, education, and sustainability efforts.

We hope you enjoy reading your Flyer and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
