The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine January ’26
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your first Flyer magazine of 2026; we’ve plenty of news and events to take you through January and beyond. I’m looking forward to wrapping up warmly to go on ‘blow the cobwebs away’ winter walks. Why not visit the website of The Hundred Parishes Society for self-guided walking routes? They’re lovely walks and start from a mile upwards.
Events and activities this time include the Wassail at the Rivers Orchard (17th January), to raise our spirits at the end of Christmas festivities. A sparkling fire, mulled cider and apple juice, and if we sing well, the prospect of fine fruit. At Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall there’s a range of classes to help you stay active, plus you can find out what events are coming up in the Hall and the latest news from Sawbo Cinema: www.smht.org.uk
Sawbridgeworth Community Library welcomes you into its warm space. The Winter Reads Challenge is on until the end of January, plus there is an evening book club, a craft club and brand new Book Trust Storytime sessions (up to age 7, from the 12th January). There are many more activities too, so pop into the library and don’t miss out! If you are looking for other things to do and haven’t picked up your free ‘After the Clocks go Back 2025 – 2026’ guide, packed with ideas, they’re in the library, pharmacies, the Hailey Centre, the Memorial Hall, the Town Council offices, Central Surgery, and other public buildings in Sawbridgeworth.
In local charity and club news Isabel Hospice has launched its ‘Gift of Time’ volunteering campaign, celebrating the extraordinary impact volunteers make and calling on more people to get involved in 2026. We hear from the Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro Centres who invite us to find out more about their charity. They are always looking for different ways of raising funds and have registered for the East Herts Lottery. Plus, the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society shares details about its recent 14th Nostalgia Day and its next meeting is on Thursday 29th January. Find out more about the Society here: www.sbwhistory.com
Thank you to Sawbridgeworth Town Council for a report on the annual community Christmas celebration and lights switch on, the regular updates from the Mayor and Town Clerk and a Councillor focus article from Eric Buckmaster, plus news of a visit from the international blood cancer charity DKMS to Sawbridgeworth Town Council to raise awareness about stem cell donors. Also thank you to Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale at Great St Mary’s church for the regular monthly article as well as sharing the results of the recent Christmas tree festival competition.
Sustainable Sawbridgeworth had a stall at the Christmas community event; hot topics were how to live more sustainably in 2026 and save money on energy bills. The Group reminds us that their two thermal imaging cameras are available for free loan at Sawbridgeworth Library. The camera helps reveal where homes lose heat by detecting infrared radiation and displaying it as a colour-coded map. Find out how to book a free loan inside. We also have an informative article about Sawbridgeworth Town Council’s Eco Working Group in your magazine.
Thank you to everyone who sends us local community editorial and supports the Flyer. We hope you enjoy reading this New Year issue.
With best wishes
