The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine January ’25
Letter from the Editor
A very warm welcome to our first issue of 2025 and we hope this new year starts well. As usual, there’s plenty of content covering a range of local community news and events, to help inform and inspire us through January and beyond.
Thinking of doing something new in the New Year? The Sawbridgeworth library, as well being a warm space with comfy seats and free drinks, has Baby Rhyme Time sessions; children’s Storytime sessions; a Needles and Pins craft group; book clubs and free digital skill sessions. We also find out that Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall has a range of exercise classes, music and family events and more! Both seem real community hubs.
Other things happening include the first of many special events related to the 300 year anniversary of the Rivers Nursery and the restoration of a Heritage Orchard. On the 25th January there will be a specially composed Wassail song and choirs of school singers in the Orchard. Sawbridgeworth Local History Society has talks coming up in January and February and they will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May. Town Clerk Chris Hunt also tells us about two VE Day events that the council is currently planning. There will be updates online, as well as in the Flyer.
Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church (SECC) shares news about some of its community activities, including youth work; service for the elderly at the Hailey centre; food hub and Open Door (drop in for people that look after babies and toddlers). Plus, an Alpha course is planned in January. There’s a lot going on!
News from other local groups includes the next Repair Cafe Sawbridgeworth (part of Sustainable Sawbridgeworth) on Saturday 25th January. You can book in one item up to two weeks before. Repairs are free but they are grateful for those that can make donations to help cover expenses. Over 50% of items were repaired at the previous Repair Café event (and advice was given on how to repair a further 28%). I’ve personally been and had a piece of sentimental jewellery repaired; it’s an incredible community initiative. Thank you to everyone involved.
The Bereavement Café shares an update article with us this month. There’s a core of regular attendees who have formed excellent friendships and are very welcoming to new guests. The Bereavement Café takes place on the first and third Tuesday each month at the Hailey Centre and everyone is welcome.
We’ve heard from East Herts Council that Pishiobury Park has now been declared as a local nature reserve. A local nature reserve is an area of land protected due to its local special interest, offering people the opportunity to study and enjoy nature. EHC have said ‘The nature reserve benefits from the presence of the Friends of Pishiobury Park group, who contribute immensely to maintaining and enhancing the park’s appearance, facilities, conservation and safety’. Why not visit and enjoy this beautiful parkland?
Additionally, we have news about the very well attended and supported Sawbridgeworth lights switch on which includes money raised for charity, plus over £8,750 has been raised at Leventhorpe’s recent annual charity week; incredible! We do hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you very much for your support and contributions.
With best wishes
