The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine January ’24
Welcome to your January issue of The Sawbridgeworth Flyer magazine. In your Sawbridgeworth Flyer magazine January edition. Amongst the community news and local events in this issue there’s a good choice of things to do in January.
Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine January Welcome
Welcome to your New Year Flyer. The community news inside will provide useful ideas and inspiration to take us through January and beyond. Maybe you’ll be able to spend time outside this month, suitably wrapped up, to blow some cobwebs away! (perhaps a bracing walk around Pishiobury Park plus there are many self-guided walking routes here: www.hundredparishes.org.uk/walks)
Community News Sawbridgeworth
This month we hear from Leventhorpe that during their recent Charity Week, organised and run by the Year 13 Enterprise students, over £11,000 was raised for the Alzheimers Society. It sounded like a totally packed week – and what an incredible achievement! Do find out more inside, about this and other school news.
Mayor’s Update Sawbridgeworth
In the Mayor’s report we hear about the traditional Wassail community event taking place at the Rivers Orchard (13th January, 6.00pm – 7.30pm) with mulled cider, apple juice and refreshments available. Plus, the Mayor is running a Quiz Night (27th January, Bullfields Centre) to raise funds for her charities, Youth Create and the Guides. If you would like tickets please email: Ruth.buckmaster@sawbridgeworth-tc.gov.uk
Other things to do include a full programme at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. One of their forthcoming events is a Movie and Prosecco Night (Grease on the 2nd February), raising funds for the Hall; as well as a Speed Quiz in the spring, where you use your smartphones with a live leaderboard on the big screen. You can see their full range of events here: www.SMHT.org.uk
Reading Challenge
There’s also a brand new reading challenge – for all ages – at the Sawbridgeworth Community Library, running until late February. It’s called ‘Winter Reads’, so why not pop in, collect your free challenge card and stay a while in the warm choosing your books. There’s always something to do in the library! Find out more in your magazine about all these activities.
Charity News Sawbridgeworth
In charity news we hear from the Sawbridgeworth Bereavement Café, which is now approaching its two-year anniversary. This facility is available to anyone coping with grief and loss. It’s on the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Hailey Centre from 2 – 4pm. You will be assured of a warm welcome. It may also be timely to share a reminder that the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity would be pleased to welcome you into their shop in town and would be grateful for your support.
We have a report about the recent Sawbridgeworth’s Nostalgia Day. The event was sadly without David Mead, who started it with wife Hazel. However, his Army Jeep was driven to the memorial he helped erect. Hazel was later invited to become a life honorary member of the 11(AC) RAF Marham Squadron and was presented with two prestigious badges for the couple’s work on the memorial. Later at the Memorial Hall a short service was then followed by entertainment. Sawbridgeworth Local History Society organised a display at the event and over £700 was raised for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Sustainable Sawbridgeworth
Additionally, Sustainable Sawbridgeworth highlights the issue of air pollution in a very informative article and reminds us that it is not just caused by traffic. Lighting fires in our homes is the largest source of harmful small particle air pollution in the UK. They also ask us to look out for the first-ever Clean Air Night on the 24th January 2024!
Enjoy your magazine and thank you very much for your support.
With best wishes
