The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine February ’26

Letter from the Editor

As we move into the second month of the year you can really notice the lengthening of the daylight hours. Seeing those beautiful first snowdrops while outside is very uplifting.

There’s plenty of community news and events in your February Flyer, including a fascinating article from the Hundred Parishes Society about interesting buildings you will see on some of their free walking routes: https://hundredparishes.org.uk/walks

Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall tells us it offers a friendly and supportive Digital Inclusion programme to help local residents feel more confident using technology. Plus, they are hosting a special Internet Safety Workshop (10th March) for us to learn how to stay safe online, avoid scams and protect your personal information. Find out more in your Flyer or visit: www.smht.org.uk Sawbridgeworth Community Library reminds us about its Warm Space with free hot drinks and highlights the range of activities happening there for both children and adults. Why not pop in?

We’ve previously mentioned the local branch of “Smartphone Free Childhood” in our Bishop’s Stortford Flyer. I thought it might be useful to say here that they are holding a panel event at the Bishop’s Stortford High School (5th March). The Group’s email is: SFCstortford@outlook.com

In local charity and group news Isabel Hospice is welcoming book donations, with donated books helping them raise vital funds. Additionally, Renée Friend BEM, Ambassador for Isabel Hospice, says: “We are extremely grateful for the support of our local communities, which enables us to continue to provide free care and support locally and throughout East Hertfordshire.” Sawbridgeworth Rotary tells us that the Christmas Eve Carols on Fair Green raised over £2,500 for local charities and the Rotary Club would like to thank everyone who took part.

Sawbridgeworth Woman’s Institute provides information about what they do; it sounds very varied! For further information you can contact: sawbridgeworth.evening.wi@gmail.com The next speaker for the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society is Sarah Kerrison from Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (26th February in the Hailey Centre) who will give an insight into Researching Your House, how different periods are defined. This year is the Society’s 10th anniversary. There are plans to publish a photobook of Sawbridgeworth and if you have photos or information which may help, please do get in touch: www.sbwhistory.com

Thank you to David Royle for a report about the Christmas party for the Homes for Ukraine support group, which included 28 Ukrainians and the town Mayor Salvatore Pagdades. Plus, we hear from Sustainable Sawbridgeworth about the recent Clean Air Night, which looked at the hidden health impacts of burning wood at home. It’s a new chapter for The Hailey, which has recently reopened following a major refurbishment. Thanks to the generosity of several grants and charitable funders, the Centre has now been fully modernised. With a core mission to bring people together, reduce loneliness, and foster friendship, it continues to offer a wide range of activities, including exercise classes, social games, technology support, health services and lunchtime meals, for over-55s in Sawbridgeworth and surrounding villages. Plus, local groups also make use of the Centre outside core hours.

Along with your regular Sawbridgeworth Town Council and Mayoral reports, an article from Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale at Great St Mary’s church and your school news, there’s plenty to read in this issue! Thank you for your support.

With best wishes
