The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine February ’25

Letter from the Editor

As I write it’s good to know that our daylight hours are gradually lengthening. Let’s hope we can all enjoy signs that spring is ahead, like when the snowdrops begin to appear. I love these beautiful, delicate and uplifting flowers. In this issue you’ll be able to catch up on a range of local community news and events, to use as the month progresses.

We have updates from a number of local groups, including the Rotary Club of Sawbridgeworth who tell us that ‘Rotary’s Carols on Fair Green’ has raised a record £1,085 for Herts Vision Loss, £1,085 for the Hertfordshire Hearing Advisory Service and £543 for other charities; wonderful news. The club is very grateful. To find out more about what your local Rotary does, contact details are inside. There’s also a report in this issue from Sawbridgeworth WI, highlighting what the WI is about and what happens at a meeting. They meet monthly at the Memorial Hall and would be pleased to hear from you if you’d like to know more.

Do you enjoy playing tennis or pickleball, or would you like to try them? Pickleball is a cross between tennis/table tennis/badminton and is played as doubles on a smaller tennis court. Sounds really interesting! Still on a ‘keeping active’ theme, we hear from Town Clerk Chris Hunt about exploring our local green spaces, which includes Pishiobury Park, which boasts many interesting historical features originally designed by Capability Brown in the 18th century. There are also varied walking routes from The Hundred Parishes Society that you might to explore, some start in or near Sawbridgeworth with many others close enough for us to follow.

Sawbridgeworth Community Library updates us that the Hublets have arrived! They also have a digital skills session; a Needles and Pins group and Baby Rhyme Time and Storytime sessions. All library groups are free and welcome new members. Plus, there’s a range of music and family-friendly events, and Forever Active classes, at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. The Mayor shares an inspiring update on recent community events that he has attended and we hear about an official Sawbridgeworth Council launch, marking the 300 years anniversary of the founding of Rivers Nursery in 1725. There are more anniversary events to come! Also, the next meeting of the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society (27th February) will be on Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church and its connection with Samuel Ryder and golfing.

Homes for Ukraine Sawbridgeworth Support Group held its Christmas party at the Congregational Church and thanked those who’ve supported the Group during 2024. The Ukrainian ladies’ Christmas tree was voted the winner at the Great St Mary’s tree festival, and the hand-painted baubles were sold off to raise money for a Ukrainian charity. Sustainable Sawbridgeworth tells us about an ongoing series of local Energy Hubs, organised by Sawbridgeworth Town Council with funding from East Herts Council, and the group provides a thermal imaging camera loan scheme through the library to find out where homes are leaking heat.

You’ll find some 2025 events ahead, plus a review of 2024 events, from Great St Mary’s Church – so as you read this issue why not put dates into your diary, so you don’t miss out! We also have school news for you. Thank you for all your support and we hope you enjoy your Flyer.

With best wishes
