Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your December issue, which I hope during this very busy time, is a useful source of community information to navigate these next few weeks!

Christmas activities include the annual Christmas Tree Festival plus Advent and Christmas services at Great St Mary’s church; as well as Christmas services at St James The Great church in High Wych – all the details are inside your issue.

Other seasonal events include ‘Carols on Fair Green’ (24th December, 6.30pm), organised by Sawbridgeworth and District Rotary. This half-hour torchlit celebration is an annual community event, which also helps raise funds for charities – not to be missed! December events at the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall include a Family Christmas Disco; live music and the annual pantomime, Aladdin. We also hear about ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’, at the Bandstand in Castle Park, Bishop’s Stortford – it’s raising funds for a local charity.

Additionally, we have a festive update from the Sawbridgeworth community library, with something happening for everyone. Plus, the library book clubs are ploughing on through the holidays, fortified with some seasonal sustenance! Why not pop in and find out more? The library thanks everyone who donated or bought books at their Christmas book sale – the free tea and coffee available in their upstairs Warm Space is due to your generosity.

In local group news the Sawbo Crafters, who enjoy weekly knitting and nattering, would be pleased to welcome new members. It’s pay as you go on Monday afternoons. The Sawbridgeworth Local History Society reports on its recent meeting, advises us that its next meeting is on the 29th January and highlights present ideas in the form of their published books, via www.sbwhistory.com We also have an article from Sawbridgeworth WI about a recent event from the British Red Cross, which tied in with the W.I.’s campaign that ‘Bystanders can be Lifesavers’. A very informative update. All these groups would be pleased to hear from you and would welcome new members.

The anniversary year marking the founding in 1725 of Rivers Nursery in Sawbridgeworth comes to an end in December 2025. They have sent us a report on some of the year’s highlights

and say “We hope you’ve had fun – we have!” Watch out for a festive Wassail in mid-January 2026 at the site. We also have an update from the Sawbridgeworth Town Twinning Association, where a group of 16 – which included the Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, Cllr Salvatore Pagdades – travelled to Moosburg, our twin town in Germany, in October. Find out more about this very busy and successful trip inside your magazine!

Charity updates include a reminder that the Isabel Hospice ‘Lights of Love Service’ in Sawbridgeworth is on the 13th December and there’s some festive news from the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. We also have school news, the monthly column from Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale at Great St Mary’s church and your regular Sawbridgeworth Town Council community news from the Mayor and Town Clerk and a Councillor focus article from Annelise Furnace.  So, there’s plenty to catch up on in this issue!

All of us at the Flyer would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support and to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

With best wishes
