The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine November ’24
Letter from the Editor
It’s incredible to be writing the December 2024 issue letter already! I hope the end of this year goes as well as possible. Your Flyer is packed with events and community updates, to take us through December and beyond.
Carols on Fair Green take place on Christmas Eve (6.30pm). This community carol singing by torchlight is led by Great St Mary’s church choir and Epping Forest Band and organised by Sawbridgeworth and District Rotary. There will be a bucket collection for local charities. We also have a full listing of Christmas services and events taking place at Great St Mary’s, which includes a Christingle Service, Christmas Carol Service and Crib Service. From the start of the Great St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival (7th-8th December) there’s an ongoing opportunity to decorate the Community Christmas Tree; either bring your own decoration or use one at the church.
There is an Isabel Hospice Lights of Love remembrance service in Sawbridgeworth (14th December, Sayesbury Manor, 4pm) and there are more details here: www.isabelhospice.org.uk/LightsOfLove The charity also has a Christmas Tree Collection and Recycling opportunity, 6th – 12th January 2025. We also hear from the Rivers Heritage Site and Orchard group about plans for a year of special events to celebrate the founding of Rivers Nursery 300 years ago; their first 2025 event will be Wassail (18th January).
Plus, don’t forget to visit your local library – a warm space with plenty of things to do – and to find out what is happening at the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall.
News from local groups includes an update from Sawbridgeworth WI on their attendance at the Herts WI Federation Annual Meeting; sounded a fascinating day. Sustainable Sawbridgeworth shares information about the new Cycling and Walking Plan and about air quality data (there are useful links in their report). The Hundred Parishes Society has a focus on education this time; a fascinating read with a direct link to Sawbridgeworth. They also have a large number of self guided walking routes on their website which might be of interest to you: https://hundredparishes.org.uk/walks Why not look in your Flyer to find out more?
The Mayor’s report highlights a Mandeville Primary School visit and a trip to the new Squirrels provision of the Scouts (children ages 4 to 6) plus a fundraiser at the Bullfields Centre which raised over £1,500 for the Mayor’s charities. This time the Town Clerk looks back at some of the key events and activities over the year, as well as highlighting the dedicated drivers of the Sawbobus and this vital community service. There’s also an article from Sawbridgeworth Town Council regarding Leventhorpe Swimming Pool; you can find out more inside your magazine.
Additionally, Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro Centres tell us that they have now purchased the musical instruments (from the Town Council grant) but many residents struggle to hold an instrument but would love to take part. If you would like to volunteer to help with musical activities of various sorts they would be pleased to hear from you. Additionally, we have the regular school news for you.
The Flyer team would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and thank you for all your support and contributions.
With best wishes
Stephanie Adams, Editor
