The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine December ’23

Welcome to your December issue of The Sawbridgeworth Flyer magazine. In your Sawbridgeworth Flyer magazine December edition. Amongst the community news and local events in this issue there’s a good choice of things to do in December.

Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine December Welcome

I know this can be a very busy month – as well as being an opportunity to reflect – and I hope you are able to balance everything it may contain! We have plenty of things to do and lots of community information, to take us from the end of this year into 2024 (I’m looking forward to seeing the Christmas lights over the next few weeks)

Community News Sawbridgeworth

In this issue we’ve received a wonderful tribute about Fenella Bateman, known to many in the community not only as a friend but for running Sawbo Books.  Fenella sadly lost her battle with cancer in October and this article remembers Fenella and the many things she did for the people of Sawbridgeworth. Thank you very much to Alix for kindly writing and sending this in for us to read.

Events and things to do include free ‘Tea and Read’ sessions at Sawbridgeworth Community Library, open all day and there is free wi-fi access as well. The library will also be taking part in the Great St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival, plus running a separate free Christmas Craft event for children (check social media for the date).

Sawbridgeworth Church and Town December

We have a full update from Fr Simon in his Church and Town article, with all the details of the services happening in Great St Mary’s in December and its new Christmas Tree Festival (9th and 10th December); Rotary’s carols on Fair Green are at 6.30pm on Christmas Eve – enjoy some singing and donations welcomed to support charitable causes; the Memorial Hall is holding a community festive cinema event and a Robin Hood pantomime (check out www.smht.org.uk/events-and-entertainment); South Mill Arts has Cinderella, The Nutcracker (a live screening) and a Santa’s Grotto; there are free Hertfordshire Health walks in Stortford and nearby, and on the 13th January, the Wassail event takes place in the Rivers Orchard. Why not find out details of all these in your Flyer?

Clerks Corner Sawbridgeworth

In this month’s Clerks Corner Chris Hunt recaps on 2023 town council organised events and confirms that all these will continue to be developed in 2024. We also hear from Sawbridgeworth WI about their recent events and meetings, including a talk by Gail Morecambe, daughter of the comedian, Eric. New members always welcome.

Sawbridgeworth Charity and Community Groups December Updates

Repair Café Sawbridgeworth (part of Sustainable Sawbridgeworth) shares an update and highlights the recent International #repairday Their next Repair Café (20th January) will be at the Bullfields Centre. Booking is required. Plus, Helen Rollason Cancer Charity can collect and recycle your Christmas tree for a donation (between 5th and 9th January 2024) You need to book online; both these sound great ideas. In fact, I have attended a Repair Café Sawbridgeworth, thank you to all involved – very welcoming, great cake and my jewellery item was completely fixed!

As we approach Christmas Central Surgery remind us about ordering prescriptions in advance and that both pharmacies in Sawbridgeworth offer a ‘Safe Space’ where anyone can go to find help.  Plus we have the usual school news for you to catch up on.

The team at the Flyer would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year; thank you very much for your ongoing support.

With best wishes
