Letter from the Editor
Your August Flyer is packed with inspiring ideas of things to do and useful community information, to help everyone in your family make the most of this time of year.
Summer events and activities include the continuation of the Summer Reading Challenge. There’s still time to sign up at the library! There’s also still time to enter the Sawbridgeworth Local History competition for primary and secondary school age children (entries to be received by 31st August). “What does Local History mean to me”, which can be in any medium, with a prize for the best in each age group. Entries can be dropped off at the library.
The Neighbourhood Policing Team local officers are running walk and talk and crime prevention events in Pishiobury Park (11th and 16th August) and the Sawbridgeworth Autumn Allotments and Gardens Show is coming up (5th September). It’s open to the public at 1.30pm.
The much-loved High Wych Scarecrow Festival and Competition returns on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September. It is the Festival’s 10th anniversary! With free visitor parking, imaginative and entertaining scarecrows, the chance to vote for your favourites, stalls, live music and refreshments, you’ll won’t want to miss it.
Plus, there will also be an Enchanted Forest to discover at St James’ church during the Festival. Over £11,000 was raised for charity from last year’s event; an incredible result.
Sustainable Sawbridgeworth recently hosted a showing of the People’s Emergency Briefing climate documentary. The evening was such a success, and the message so important, that the group intends to show the film again later this year. We’ve also been told about a new book: ‘Celebrating the 300th Anniversary of the Founding of Rivers Nursery’. You can pick up a copy from Sawbridgeworth Town Council or at Maintenance Days in Rivers Orchard on the first Sunday of every month. Sounds a fascinating read. Plus, thank you to Sawbridgeworth WI for their article about what gives us Hope. It’s such an uplifting piece to read. If you would like to join in with the Sawbridgeworth WI, they meet on the third Tuesday of the month at Memorial Hall, all the details are in your Flyer.
In charity news this month the Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro Centres are asking for your help for their summer event, can you offer a donation for their raffle or tombola? Donations can be dropped off at the reception at Jacobs (on The Rivers Hospital site). After a recent Kyiv Classic Accordion Duo Concert for the Sawbridgeworth Ukraine Support Group, £750 was raised for the UK-AID charity, who have just sent another consignment of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This is part of an ongoing determination to remember and support Ukraine and our locally-based Ukrainian families.
Thank you to Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale at Great St Mary’s and the Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, Councillor Angus Parsad-Wyatt, for their updates this month. We also hear about the Mayor’s first Community Action Day, with plans now being made for the next one later this year. In addition, we have a very inspirational story about a former Sawbridgeworth resident Valerie Lolomari, who has recently been awarded an MBE for her work through the charity that she founded ‘Women of Grace’ www.womenofgrace.org.uk Thank you Corinne for sending this in to us.
