The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine August ’25
Letter from the Editor
With the height of summer upon us, I hope you can enjoy the longer daylight while we still have it and the wildlife around us. In fact, later in the evening on the middle day of this year (2nd July) I saw several roe deer on the move in the countryside; just beautiful. You’ll find plenty of information and events in your Flyer to take you through these school holiday and summer days.
Fun on the Field is back on Saturday 30th August and Clerk Chris Hunt tells us it is a day of fun and festivities for all ages, so don’t miss it! Then the annual High Wych Scarecrow Festival takes place the following weekend (6th-7th September) Why not wander through the village to admire the scarecrows – and much more – as well enjoy refreshments, stalls and live music. Plus, the Sawbridgeworth Autumn Show then takes place on Saturday 13th September. You are warmly invited to enter; a wide range of sections are available including children’s and beginners, and the event takes place in the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. The Sawbridgeworth Neighbourhood Watch Team also tell us about drop-in surgeries they are holding at Sawbridgeworth Town Council (12th August) and High Wych Coffee lounge (14th August).
At the library there are plenty of things going on over the summer holidays – and there’s still time to join the Summer Reading Challenge! On finishing the challenge every child receives a medal, certificate and entry in a prize draw. The Mayor of Sawbridgeworth will be handing out the medals at two September ceremonies. There is also a mini treasure hunt in the library and Thursday afternoon crafts – as well as all the other regular activities.
Local group and charity news includes an update from the Sawbridgeworth Local History Group. Royal Gunpowder Mills is the subject of their next talk on Thursday 28th August, by Richard Thomas, and they are currently arranging speakers for 2026. Thank you to David Royle for his Sustainable Sawbridgeworth report. He represented the group at the ‘Creating community champions for clean air’ workshop hosted by Herts County Council. He also updates us on other activities that the group undertook to mark Clean Air Day, it’s a very informative update.
We hear about a recent concert in Sawbridgeworth at Great St Mary’s Church. Igor Sayenko and Olekseii Kolomeits were celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first concert in the UK and £1000 was raised for local Felstead charity UK AID, who supply humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Plus, Jane lets us know that her most recent quiz has raised £2,930 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Anyone who missed the quiz but would like to make a donation can still do so; the details are inside. What incredible fundraising achievements.
In this issue you will also find all your regular Sawbridgeworth Town Council updates, including the Mayor’s column; Chris Hunt’s Town Clerk’s news and a report from Councillor Greg Rattey. The reports are full of community news for you. We also find out about LevFest 2025 from Leventhorpe. It began in 2018 when the idea to combine the annual Sports Day with a music festival on the field was born, and this year they welcomed approximately 1000 visitors. Sounds like it was a fantastic day for all involved!
Thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy your August issue.
With best wishes
