The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine August ’24

Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your August issue and hopefully the chance to enjoy picnics, walks, cycle rides and more.  I’m sure my family and I will do this too and make the most of the school summer holidays, which can seem long but end up going very quickly!

As you look at your Flyer you’ll be able to plan in event diary dates and catch up on local community news. Fun on the Field takes place on Saturday 31st August with plenty of things to do, including a dog show, fun fair and Sunny the Sawbosaurus will be out with a treasure trail to discover things about being sustainable. The next Sawbridgeworth Energy Hub will take place at Fun on the Field too (offering guidance and signposting to home energy efficiency solutions). Plus, the Autumn Allotments and Gardens Show is also on the 31st August in Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. There’s still time to enter with a wide choice of sections, including opportunities for children to enter in age categories. On the day itself you can visit the show from 1.30pm. Additionally, Sustainable Sawbridgeworth is running a Community Veggie Feast on Saturday 21st September at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall.  Learn about the benefits of a plant-based diet while enjoying vegetarian dishes.

The High Wych Scarecrow Festival takes place on the 7th and 8th September, with scarecrows crafted by village residents (you can then vote for your favourites), a trail of snails to follow to the church, and much more. Last year’s Festival raised nearly £10,000 for charities – and the organisers would like to say thank you.

The Summer Reading Challenge continues throughout the school holidays plus there will soon be free Digital Skills sessions in Sawbridgeworth library (and Bishop’s Stortford library) to help you make the most of your devices safely and confidently. There are also many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, including Pishiobury Park and other East Herts parks; Castle Park is holding an official free opening event on Sunday 1st September and The Hundred Parishes Society has free local walking routes.

Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall has a full event programme, including family discos, the annual Panto, Aretha Franklin Tribute (August), Whitney Houston Tribute (September), Oktoberfest (October), spirit tasting (November) and Uncle Funk (December). They’re looking forward to the opening of the new parts to the hall.

This month’s club and group news includes an update from the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society about recent and forthcoming talks and its new website (the website includes all current Society events, books to purchase and articles). Plus, we have updates from the Homes for Ukraine Support Group, Sawbridgeworth Town FC, Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club, Sustainable Sawbridgeworth and Sawbridgeworth WI. Do read your magazine to learn more about these local events and group updates, as well as charity news.

Thank you very much to Fr Simon from Great St Mary’s for the monthly Church and Town articles we have shared; this is the last one from him as he moves on to be vicar of All Saints’ Church, Hockerill, in Bishop’s Stortford. Within his article Fr Simon says: “Sawbridgeworth – both the place and Great St Mary’s – is special, with a strong sense of community, identity, history, and collaboration”. Additionally, we have a Mayoral update and school news for you. Enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
