The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine April ’26
Letter from the Editor
It’s lovely to write your April letter, knowing that the bluebells will be emerging as a welcome and uplifting sign of springtime. I hope you discover local events and ideas in your Flyer that will inspire you to make the most of this new season. Also, that chocolate (for those who like it) may feature over Easter and beyond!
The Sawbridgeworth May Fayre is back on Sunday 3rd May 2026, from 12pm to 4pm. With live music, stalls, craft vendors and a BBQ, as well as a classic car show, wood turning display, bouncy castle, soft play and food and drink. Plus, fairground rides in the car park, football target games at the Cricket Club and the Teddy Zip Line at Great St Mary’s Church: www.smht.org.uk/may-fayre Don’t miss it!
Other events coming up include the Great St Mary’s Church Pre-Loved Fashion Show in the Memorial Hall (18th April) with all proceeds going to the church; an opportunity to hear about Witches and Highwaymen of Hertfordshire in the 18th century at the Sawbridgeworth Local History meeting (30th April) with non-members (£5) welcome, plus the Big Breakfast (16th May) which is supporting Christian Aid.
We also hear from Jenny, a Sawbridgeworth Library volunteer, who is in the library most Mondays. Jenny tells us about Story Time, which runs from 2.30pm-3.00pm on Mondays and 11.30am-12.00 noon on Saturdays: “There’s always a craft activity and often some enthusiastic participation when we read the books aloud!” No need to book, just turn up. In Bishop’s Stortford a new event called ‘Eco Fair In The Square’ (22nd April) includes hands-on activities for all ages. Why not look inside to find out more about all the events and activities I’ve mentioned here?
Local charity and group news includes an inspirational update from Sean. As well as running the London Marathon for Bowel Cancer UK in April 2026, in memory of his late wife who sadly passed away after a courageous battle with the illness, Sean recently held a coffee morning fundraiser at the High Wych Memorial Hall. The event raised £1,600 for Bowel Cancer UK. Sean said “I was absolutely thrilled by the turnout. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who came along, donated and made special such an important cause.” If you would like to donate, the link is: www.justgiving.com/page/sean-oconnor-1750678701016
Thank you to David Royle for a report from the Sawbridgeworth Ukraine Support Group. The Group collected food and toiletries for Ukraine in February and delivered donations to the UK-AID warehouse in Felsted for eventual delivery to Ukraine. In addition, on Tuesday 24th February, they held their fourth vigil for Ukraine in Sayesbury Manor, courtesy of the Town Council. This included a welcome from the Mayor, Cllr Salvatore Pagdades, prayers were read by the Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale and Associate Minister Revd Canon Robert Riley-Braley from Great St Mary’s and Gary Hanson from the Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church. Hanna spoke on behalf of their Ukrainian guests which included highlighting the importance of continuing support locally and internationally for Ukraine and Ukrainians.
Your regular Sawbridgeworth Town Council and Mayoral reports are inside your Flyer, as well as an article from Revd Dr Sara Batts-Neale, along with some school news. We hope you enjoy your magazine and thank you for all your support.
With best wishes
